I've started taking a £10 note into supermarkets so that I can concentrate my mind on what I actually need instead of wandering round the shelves. Taking a basket instead of a trolley helps too.

I'm only shopping for me so I realise this won't suit everyone but maybe having really limited cash with you would stop a little middle of the week shopping trip turning into another big shock at the till.

So my 39 tomato plants were not a stupid idea !!! They are a wise investment of pennies, and most of the seeds were free. We also live on passata and tinned toms, glad I saved all those jam jars now.

Not feeling very well today and Dd has an exam to catch up on today that she failed when she did her chef's training. Luckily Sil is still home to look after Dgs. Have jippy tummy and feel very weak, so may not be around taday.

Hoping to freeze some of my excess HG Tomatoes for sauces etc. Also planning to keep my raised beds as full as possible during Autumn/Winter as they usually sit empty, when I could be growing loads of things apparently. I think VAT is one of the things to watch in tomorrow's budget and whether it is extended to other foodstuff.
Re: the PF that some people have mentioned suffering from. I had this really badly for a few years and had some special insoles made for my shoes, which helped alot. I have had a bad back for years and wondered whether this had made the problem worse. Now, although I still suffer from back pain, the PF has mostly disappeared and is certainly much improved to what it was. Don't know if this is as a result of using the insoles or whether it just went away on its own.

Err, long time lurker finally with something (hopefully) useful to say!..........

All this talk of tomatoes has reminded me - approved food (which I think a fair few people on here use) have organic tinned tomatoes atm.... for 33p a tin. It is wrongly priced on their first page as more but they definately only charged me this when I stocked up on Friday. They also have some really good bread mixes (de identified but morrisons for anyone who wants to know) at 99p for a case of 5. Might be worth a stock up?

BTW I am not affiliated to them in any way (just love a bargain!)
    Hope this helps someone

    Hi everyone! :hello:

I am not sure where the thread went on monitoring supermarket price hikes - the one which was going to be called "Supermarket Snitches" maybe? I think I read last week that it was merged with something else, but I couldn't find it. Anyhoo, I just wanted to report that in my latest undercover (I went with my duvet over my head...) to $ain$burys I discovered that their Ba$ics ham had gone up by 2p from last week to £1.40. I was rather cross and ranted about it for rather a long time (much to the embarrassment of hubby :rotfl:)

Anyway, just wanted to let you guys know (if you didn't already) and also just to have another little  about it!

The supermarket snitches thread was moved to another board. I think it was the shopping one, but as I never venture onto that board, I can't be certain.

Goodness I'm glad I read this thread we eat loads of tomatoes, tinned, fresh, passata everything. We laughed a few weeks back as my Mum hates to throw any seedlings away and between us we have 83 tomato plants!!! sounds like it's just as well :)

Wish I'd planted more now. I only have 6 plants of different varieties. The last few years that I've tried growing tomatoes I've not had any luck. Don't know if it was the wet summers or what. I used to be able to grow them ok, but I lived in London then and there's a different micro climate there.

I'm going to have to stock up on tins and passatta as well as puree as we get through a lot too.
