And Tesco Value mixed dried fruit, 40pence until now, is suddenly 65pence a pack. Couldn't have anything to do with people wanting it for making Xmas cake and puds, could it? Or am I being a bit too cynical?
  • oh westywoodpecker, I am so sorry. :grouphug: It is a crying shame when a youngster who wants to work has his chance taken away from him. It is so UNFAIR. The gov pays out millions to lazy good for nothing benefit scroungers like the young men I see on an estate sometimes. They doss around with their dogs and do nothing yet they are supported. I wish they would help willing youngsters onto the work ladder

Just a quick update on my DS. He was told he would be made redundant yesterday & worked his last day today  In total 3 out of the 4 apprentice lost their jobs, the fourth spared due to only having 2 mts left out of his three years. (He worked for Audi as a mechanic)

Since coming home early today, he's been "locked" in his room. He's obviously gutted. Things could be a lot worse, he's no bills to pay & we'll help him out etc. but it's the first thing that he's been really good at & was so enthusiastic.

    .

I'm sorry to hear about this - and a job that he actually likes too - that makes it even more of a shame.

Hmmm.......what sort of trade is this in? I'm just wondering a bit what the details are here....just in case there's any helpful "lateral thinking" any of us can come up with to help on this.

Thank you so much for the kind words of previous posters. After a quick cry & blowing of her nose, my mum got it into context when she said "he's lost his job, not his life" Thoughts & prayers to those also worried about redundancies.

Oh Westy' that's dreadful, I'm so sorry for your lad.

I was "let go" from my first proper job at 18 after a few months of employement, I remember being absolutely devastated and really thinking that my life WAS over, it's such an awful thing to happen at an early age.

Do please try to reassure him that it's not about him, this is a whole crappy economic time that is seeing so many of us facing redundancy from industries and professions that really ought to be "safe". Good job he's got you and his grandma there for him.

Best wishes, hope he keeps his pecker up and that you all get through this OK.

Maybe its time we were really strict about not buying from Tescos and Asda, and all going to Lidl & Aldi ....ok so they are increasing prices as well, but they are cheaper--and that will bring the big boys prices down a wee bit to compete...?? MSErs change the world ! whoohoo !

Westy, sending you and DS loads of love at this tough time. I hope things pick up soon and he can find something else.

    T xx
  • I'm starting to get really cross about all this economic rubbish that is effecting those of us who haven't taken risks with our lives, haven't sat around not working and have generally tried to better ourselves. I'm not normally one for moaning that things are "not fair" I learnt a long time ago that life isn't fair and all you can do is deal with what gets dealt to you;.

But right now I'm getting really bloody angry about it all. Young lad's like Westy's DS having their whole world ripped apart, yes he'll get through it, yes it will come good in the end, it's character building and all that jazz but sometimes it would be nice if people didn't have to suffer.

My DH was made redundant in March 2005, he's now self employed and earning very little, we've just got back on our feet financially having sold everything we had of value to get back to solvent and now it looks like I'm going to be made redundant from my traditionally very safe profession that I'm still paying student loans for getting into (I went to Uni as a mature student to better myself having left school with four poor O levels).

There are way worse things in life I know, I also know that we'll survive but just sometimes, I'd like life to be just slighly !!!!!! for some of us some of the time.

Sorry for the moan, I need to get back to my upbeat, survivalist self fairly soon as even I'm finding the moaning tedious.

Oh I do so agree with you. We (like a lot of people) have bought a house we could afford and not necessarily what we would have liked, lived on what we had, not on what credit we could get - even though sometimes what we "had" was a miniscule amount as have also been through redundancy and two recessions. We have done it "right" and are now suffering the consequences of those who lived for today and spent money (that often wasn't theirs to spend) like water.

My DH doesn't know if he will have a job after Christmas, my DD1 is facing relocating to another country so her DH can keep his job. My DS1 has had his working week cut and faces a further cut - better than losing his job I know but he still has to pay the mortgage and eat! My DD2 is studying for A levels with a view to going to Uni next September but is starting to get very morose and scared at the prospect of starting her working life in a world where there may be few jobs (because this mess is going to last a LONG time) and where she will have to start out saddled with a student debt that will amount to well over £20,000, as it is doubtful she will be able to find much in the way of employment as she studies and we have no money to help her. My DS2 is just 13 and we try hard to protect him from too much worry just yet (we do think it is important he isn't clueless about things but don't want him to be burdened by too much too young) BUT he has asked for reassurance twice in the past week that we won't lose our house if his dad loses his job...................how DARE those "£$*&^%$£ selfish, greedy people that caused all this (and I mean bankers AND borrowers) make my boy feel like this!

Furthermore (oh I’m really on a roll now!) my DH has tried to show good sense by “investing” money from his wages into a pension all his working life. This was often money we could ill afford to live without, but we tried to keep an eye on the future as well as live in the present. Now it looks as though all that “investment” will have been wittled away to almost nothing and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to find that when we do reach retirement age (about 14 years time) we will find that anyone with any sort of private pension will have either no access to a state pension or will be taxed heavily to help provide for the !!!!less who have lived a life spending their cash on all the things we have managed to live without.

I mean no offence here to people who have had the misfortune to have lost jobs and homes through no fault of their own and who have needed / will need state help to get back on track. I am referring to those who buy what they want when they want it regardless of if they can afford it, and who have lived the high life with no thought to the future. Or those who have seen a life on benefits as a lifestyle choice, know their way round the system and who in some cases seem to have more disposable income than workers – that last point is a whole new bugbear I could rant on about forever but will curb my inclinations as this is already the longest post I have ever made......and if you have made it through to the end I hope it makes sense, and well done on your stamina!
