  • you are so right about the fear being worse than the actual event. In our case: fear of redundancy, it didn`t happen and all the staff were put on a 2 1/2 day week in order to keep everyone at work. The relief was fantastic and believe me half a loaf is better than nothing. Later the fear of surviving on half a salary again, 10 years later. Ok we had 3 months to plan so I scrimped and prepared and again we got by. Later in life my dh stepped down from being a director (not as lucrative as it sounds) and took a 2/3 cut in salary as he went part time in the last 2 years before retiring. I was so worried about managing but we did. Now retirement on a skinny pension for me as his is due in 2012 and we are dipping into savings but its ok because I planned ahead. I have been worried about all this each and every time so that my stomach was churning but we survived. Now I look back with hindsight and concern about illnesses that could be caused by worry today ie strokes etc. Not worth it but oh so easy to say

My dh was made redundant when my dd was very small. we had moved to our current location for the job as well. It seemed black at the time, but of course we survived. So when DH was made redundant again a few years ago, it was much easier to be positive, although it was still difficult of course.

Certainly for us, the fear was worse than the reality in the end. Long term effect is that we know that there is every chance to cope with what life throws at us. As long as we are all well, that is what matters.

My neighbour used to say to me that people matter more than 'things'. She died of cancer a few years ago at a fairly young (less than 50) age and her motto has become mine.

DH is just about to embark on a fairly long term job abroad. Visits every 3 months. We've never done this before. I'm unable to go as well as ds is still in school. DD is living other side of world for 6 months and I'm missing her. Life will be changing a lot. But we'll manage.

I've had to do this. The big breakthrough for me was the cheap calls on 1899. It meant we could talk for 45 mins a day.

You have to do what you have to do! :A

PenPen, I joined this morning and could only see the stuff for sale but once I'd logged in I could see everything :D

Great idea for a site Mrs M :T

Well....thanks Mrs M for the input all round on Nonnymouse. Er....I think people might find that the original idea came from Mardatha? and Tashja is very kindly doing a grand job of co-ordinating it and not coming and "beating up" those who sorta said "You're obviously it" as co-ordinator! LOL .....but various people have been helping out in various ways since this started up.

I have noticed 2 people who obviously needed a "helping hand" having a little giftie courtesy of Nonnymice since this started - there may be others...:D (edit: I see there are).

Hi, Sorry had to post and run yesterday. Just to clarify he did ask before taking it. It's just that he literally had to empty my purse. Sorry should have worded it better.:o I feel a lot better today. He is a good lad really. Thanks for all your support.:T I'm not usually Doom and Gloom. I bought Mamma Mia with a Wollies voucher and DS3 loves to watch it on singalong. He can't read yet but he's convinced it makes him sing better:rotfl:

Och well....all's well that ends well.....I guess some of us just took it the way we woulda meant it.....you can "blame" me....as I'm normally someone who examines every single word carefully before she says it and then changes it (if shes seen another one she prefers) and I accept that I "thinka lika da lawyer" on the exact words I use (my life has "trained" me that way)....I sorta forget that most people don't quite "live in the same world" as me in that respect:o :D - sorrrreeee...

Just been over and joined Nonny Mouse. Not had a chance to look around properly, but will get there.
  • Thanx for the nonymouse link Mrs Micawber - just joined ! Thanx for the origianal idea Mardatha, and Tashja for co-ordinating it all. Also thank you to Ceridwen - I have just found your Simplifying Life thread - started reading it and got the urge to de-clutter - so far: 2 large bags recycling, 3 bags for charity shop, 1 bag shredded paperwork, lots of stuff now has new home - but the best was finding a box in cupboard that ex OH had stashed 18 months ago.

In box found 3 unopened bottle of red wine ( nice start to Xmas), 6 bottles Carling lager, and a can of Guiness that was out of date in Oct 2005 ????? More space now on shelf ! Actually now have 4 empty shelves as recycling was videos taped off tv and never watched! All this from 1 bed apartment - must have expanding walls:rotfl:
Finally realised something had sunk in today when I looked at Christmas deccies on sale in Woolies and didn't buy any coz I didn't NEED them!!!
When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on

Planning on making alot of big meals and freezing them in portions this month! November was a terrible month for convenience food and takeaway  dont know what happened!

Can we freeze pasta and sauce or is it best to just freeze the sauce i make? just want to double check!

Doing a load of cleaning tomorrow and could have done with some more Bi carb of soda  will just have to make do i imagine. Can someone recommend a good abrasive that i can perhaps make up? I have CIF cream cleaner with the grit but looking for something a bit tougher - (thought someone on this thread might know something)

Going to set up an ISA tomorrow - closed my last one as never had anything in, determined to put £100 in this month and £100 in Dec and hopefully £200 in Jan so we got a little cushion if DP looses his job, with baby due in Feb i am only working til end of Jan and then its teeny tiny benefits i am entitled to :( Can anyone recommend a good bank/BS that is open on Sat. We are with Halifax at the mo, dont really rate the service particularly, was thinking of seeing what Lloyds had to offer.

DH knows someone who has an open fire and never has to buy wood. They get it from all over the place. The stove is much better because you can burn stuff that would otherwise spit - I think!

I have friends who rely on wood burners as they live too far off the beaten track for gas and electricity is too expensive to heat a large stone cottage high on a windy hill. They have found that the cost of wood has rocketed this year due to more people using woodburners and the rising cost of other fuels. The wood suppliers have jacked up their prices.

To be sure of a constant supply of heat and hot water wood burners have to have wood that has dried out well - some of the split logs are still very large and heavy. Oddments of wood suffice for kindling but only hard woods burn for any length of time and give a good heat. Soft woods are likely to leave a tarry deposit within the chimney which can catch fire. Burning painted or treated woods is a health hazard for you and your neighbours. There is also a huge output of dioxins from wood burners unless they burn properly at very high temperatures.

So, they are fine if you are fit enough to carry wood and if you live in the middle of a forest or have a good wood supplier. Not so good for skip divers as you have little idea what you are burning and a fluctuating supply of fuel. You will need a reasonably large, dry area to store your wood, not too far from the stove (not the bottom of a long garden). Used properly, you can run a lot of radiators from a Rayburn or a woodstove and heat your hot water too. Unfortunately if the wood is very damp the fire goes out and you have to rake out the grate and start over. That may be why some fireplaces were designed to have the logs stacked alongside.

EDIT: My friend tells me you can now buy wood chip and wood pellets for woodburners. http://www.nef.org.uk/logpile/woodfuel/buyingwood.htm
  • Just a quick update on my DS. He was told he would be made redundant yesterday & worked his last day today  In total 3 out of the 4 apprentice lost their jobs, the fourth spared due to only having 2 mts left out of his three years. (He worked for Audi as a mechanic)

Since coming home early today, he's been "locked" in his room. He's obviously gutted. Things could be a lot worse, he's no bills to pay & we'll help him out etc. but it's the first thing that he's been really good at & was so enthusiastic.

Thank you so much for the kind words of previous posters. After a quick cry & blowing of her nose, my mum got it into context when she said "he's lost his job, not his life" Thoughts & prayers to those also worried about redundancies.
Now thanks to Tommix & Queen Bear, now Lady Westy of Woodpecker :)
