I do realise that things are tough and we should be realistic about when it will turn around but surely a positive, optimistic attitude will serve us better than being too "doom and gloom" about how long this will all drag on for. I think a positive attitude is more likely to help people cope in the long run. ;)

Its all about keeping a sense of perspective too. I'm sure everyone remembers Y2K which turned out to be a total media fabrication!

Obviously we are in a recession and there are bad things happening, and maybe more bad things to come, but let's be hopeful! Don't let the media persuade you that its time for armageddon ;)

I really feel for anyone facing redundancy and anyone struggling to make ends meet. I've been through several recessions (the first time was really scarey!) but we will survive!

  • Hi, Sorry had to post and run yesterday. Just to clarify he did ask before taking it. It's just that he literally had to empty my purse. Sorry should have worded it better.:o I feel a lot better today. He is a good lad really. Thanks for all your support.:T I'm not usually Doom and Gloom. I bought Mamma Mia with a Wollies voucher and DS3 loves to watch it on singalong. He can't read yet but he's convinced it makes him sing better:rotfl:

:) it sounds as if he was trying to stuff himself instead of loading all the work on you... shame he needed all your pennies though(!)

well... the waiting regarding redundancy is prolonged... for a week and a half... am not sure of the full details but they have to make a case so to speak as why they should not be made redundant next week and then they will hear the week after.... if anyone has tips on how to prepare ourselves a bit better in the next week and a half... i would be grateful :o

I agree that the fear is the worst thing - I could plan better if I knew a) what was happening and b) what help we can get if dh is made redundant until he/I/we get another job...

I thought things were tough when i was on maternity leave, hardly any money and not a lot of sleep, but now i've been back at work part time (3 days) for about 6 weeks and things are even tougher, the extra money i am earning just seems to go on nursery, diesel for car (used to walk everywhere, job in different town) and more money being spent on convenience food as never have the time now to cook from scratch as my days off seem to be spent keeping the house clean, ironing and just trying to keep on top of things. Sometimes i wonder whether its actually worth going to work as i seem to hardly spend any quality time with my little one as i'm always playing catch up and just about breaking even, or maybe i just need to get more organised. :)

    Dear Kaze,

    Welcome to motherhood! :D

Eventually things will settle, you will find a way of cutting corners and like all of us who have had children one day you will also find your sleep back - but it might not be for a while.

You might as well accept it and try to make the best of it, and NEVER turn down any offer of help!

    Best wishes,

    Caterina

I think it can be really difficult to plan ahead especially when you don't know what's coming, but I do think it helps to keep as optimistic as possible. What helps me is to imagine the worst possible scenario (not being gloomy here) and then to budget ahead as far as possible. For example I started to budget for no extra's, overtime, etc. coming in and then when I had adjusted finances to cope with that, I factored in a 4 day week, which DH is now on. I've managed to budget for this for 6 months:eek: (very scary) and for a 3 day week for just January  . I only achieved this by cutting back and penny-pinching on absolutely everything and it will be very tough, but at least we get some peace knowing we can cope for a bit longer. As for redundancy there is no way I can budget for this and DH was already in the redundancy 'pool' early November but missed it that time thank goodness. We know it could be on the cards for the future but there's no point in worrying about something you can't change and I believe your health really is more important. So I will just keep on stocking up the freezer and watching the pennies, its amazing what you can achieve when you put your mind to it. The weekly shopping has become somewhat of a challenge, but it can be quite exciting shopping as cheaply as possible and I actually think we eat better now because I'm thinking much more about what actually goes in my trolley and how I can best use it. Sorry to ramble:o . Good luck to everone struggling through these difficult times - keep going!

You beat me to it Caterina!!!!:T

Just got an e mail saying my order was on its way.

I am so glad I started buying presents a few months ago as a lot of the things I bought on Amazon special deals are now quite a bit dearer!!!!!

Not sure if DD(19) is coming home this weekend - she said she might but then havenot heard from her. In case she has decided to surprise us am going to get changed and do a quick tidy up.

DH and I have been looking at his latest pay statement and seriously wondering if he would be nearly as well off retiring early. The amount that comes off each month for NI, tax and firms pension as well as AVCs is scary!!!
