well i can't believe this had dropped down so many pages!!
well as i'm now redundant i'm searching for more ways to save money,
we already do the GC, bulk cook and bulk out meals with pulses and veg, freeze extra portions, make as much at home as possible, buy own brand as far as possible
next is downsize housing, cut back on anything not necessary (ie downsize sky package, i would get rid but as we don't go out anywhere it's our one main luxury) try and reduce insurance premiums etc
have the option of some temping so am waiting to hear on that and hubby is doing as much OT as possible
so ladies and gents what else can i do?
am not doing ebay selling as i don't like paypal (long story not going there) but have looked at when the car boot sales are on nearby.

Coukd you maybe take up dog walking or pet sitting for people at work all day or on holiday? A guy we used to know used to walk four or five dogs a day and earned a bit that way.
I know a few friends who struggle with pets and would happily pay someone to nip in and walk them.0 -

I am a firm supporter of our police but I was horrified when I watched that video on tv last night. It must be heartbreaking for his family to watch that footage seeing how he spent his last minutes.Life is too short to waste a minute of it complaining about bad luck. Find joy in the simple things, show your love for those around you and be grateful for all that you have.0 -

We have as a couple always agreed that I would only work if it fitted in around the boys school times and Dh work.
Now Ds2 is about to go to secondary school in Sept and this is still the way we feel.
I work as a dinnerlady at DS2's primary school and will be continuing there after he moves schools.
We don't actually "need" this money but it is nice to be able to put some away so that we have a buffer "just in case".
DS1 has already stated his intentions of studying A levels and going to Uni and knows exactly which courses he is going to do (he's 14 in a couple of days time!), so we know we will need some extra there to possibly help out.
Both boys are very good though in that they save up their pocket money etc for things they want, like Wii or Playstation games etc.
DS1 now has a Saturday job and is saving up to pay for a football season ticket amongst other things.
When DS1 was born moneywise it would have made more sense for me to go back to work full-time and Dh to stay at home I was earning more than him, but we could pay for everything we needed with his wages so I became a SAHM, and Dh has progressed in the job market. My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
So we’re empty nesters.
Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman0 -
Sillylittlejill - do what you know is best for you. Working full time or going to uni suits some people well enough but is not going to suit everyone. You will never be happy if you are working full time when you would rather be at home with your kids, and this would rub off on them and your OH too. I have always worked part time and have been so lucky that I have been able to change my working hours (currently 9.30 to 2.3 so that I can take the kids to school and pick up after) and also working days when there are school assemblies etc, and this works for us. I also know people who have found it tough to make ends meet on one wage because they didn't want both parents out working, but have managed to get by.
I admire you for knowing what you want out of life, so stick to your guns!
Too many people go to university, not necessarily because they really need to for their chosen career and it doesn't guarantee you any success in life afterwards.0 -
It's been interesting catching up with this thread.
When I was a SAHM, I was often called a 'lazy housewife' and asked to look after other people's children or sit in whilst workmen came to other people's houses. I never did and I still feel cross about it.
I feel that the best person to look after a child is its family. How about limiting child benefit to those who need it and paying extra so that everyone that wants to can stay at home?0 -
