High Pressure Sales From Talk Talk

before I take this further I owul dlike some advice. Recently we were called regularly by talk talk trying to sell us new products. the conversations got heated as they were quite rude.

THEN.. my mum who is 87 calls me a few days ago to say a package has arrived. I go round to her house and there is a Talk Talk router. I asked her whether she had been called by Talk Talk and sure enough a few days earlier she had been 'pestered' by three callers within an hour. She had explained to one of the ladies she didnt even have a computer and the lady replied...' well you might one day..'. My mum lives alone and does her best but obviously she musy have agreed to an upgrade on the phone but does not remember any mention of what the upgrade was..costs etc. I checked her bank account yesterday and she had £40 installation fee plusaround £12 per month for broadband.. I AM DISGUSTED WITH THE WAY THEY SOLD THIS PRODUCT TO MY MUM

WHAT SHOULD I DO ?

Cheers

Peter

Your mum should have the seven day "cooling off" period afforded by the Distance Selling Regulations:

    http://www.oft.gov.uk/advice_and_resources/resource_base/legal/distance-selling-regulations/

I presume that your mum is already a Talk Talk customer? I would return the router for a full refund, and arrange to leave Talk Talk for a more reputable telephone company. Of course, you could ask what Talk Talk are willing to do to keep you (a few months free line rental, perhaps?)

It might be a good idea to get your mum's phone number registered with the TPS (http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/) so that she doesn't receive general sales calls (although it won't stop companies with whom she has a business relationship from calling).

Hope you get the situation resolved to your satisfaction. Good luck!
  • I spoke to customer service and they 'agreed' that they had persauded my mum to change plan and get broadband but then said if she wanted to cancel the plan she would be liable to a 70pound disconnection charge as she had effectively entered into an 18month agreement. I argued that this wasnt the case and insisted I spoke to a manager. Eventually one of the managers came on the phone and said there was 'no way' they could downgrade the plan. She agreed to reimburse her the connection fee and reduce the plan cost from 10pounds to 5 pounds per month(her original plan cost) for 3 months but after that she would have to pay the extra 5 pounds for the next 15 months !!. I said that was not fair and she said there was nothing she could do. The only other choie I had was to cancel Talk Talk altogether and go back to BT.. great customer service... does she have no rights in this at all !!

Any help from Martin or his colleagues would be great

I worked for a company last summer who sold talk talk via telesales, and was put on talk talk for a week. The young people who sell the products are under a HUGE preshure to get sales, the script is even designed to 'trick' people into taking out the service.

Alot of tactics are used to get bank details from people, which includes saying that its 'free' for so many days.

The system they had made it very hard to remove someone from the system unless they were listed as deseased! Most people didn't use the system correctly which meant most people got called multiple times per week/day.

I left the company after a month because of the awful way they got their sales.

I can confirm that there is a cooling off period and she can cancel. I think it is the first 7 to 14 days.

TalkTalk customer services are absolutly awful, i would suggest giving consumer direct a ring and getting them to file a complaint against them.

Also, if you know the number that called your mother and it happens to beggin with 01159...I would be happy to pass on the adress of the call centre.

Go public, see your MP, local/national papers. They will soon back down, then do them for damages.

I unfortuantely was tricked into taking part in their door to door pressure techniques. I had no warning and was disgusted during the 2nd interview at the job to find it was door to door sales. The company that pressures you into these sales, is SRM Marketing. Website is srmmarketingltd.co.uk Please email them with complains!

I've been hounded by calls from Talk Talk over the last month or so. I went onto their website checking out their options and spoke to one of their advisors through the website. I checked to see if my number was in their area and she replied that all I had to do was agree to the terms and conditions and I was signed up! I told her I was only seeing what was available but as they'd obviously got my number they have been phoning me about three times a day ever since. I have caller display though so I never actually answer but I know it's them as they did actually leave a message one time. The volume of calls seems to have fallen so they've obviously got the message, not good though.

We had pushy sales people in the doorway of TJ Hughes in a local shopping centre. The bloke was insisting talk talk could save us money despite the fact

    a) I am 3 months into an 18 month contract with BT for our phoneline so would incur cancellation charges were I to move to talk talk

    b) I am 3 months into a 12 month contract with O2 for our broadband so would incur cancellation charges were I to move to talk talk

    c) Talk talk is not unlimited broadband and is therefore unsuitable for our usage

Needless to say we politely declined. On the plus side talk talks sales wasn't as pushy as one time with Npower in our town centre when we had someone chasing us down the street trying to make us talk to them!

If they cold call, don't engage in any conversation with them. Just hang up.
