We made butter the other day, by placing some double cream in a jam jar, and shaking it!!!! After about 10 mins, it came together in a ball, and the liquid that was left (the butter milk) i used making some scones!!!

I did the exact same thing with my 9 year old. He was absolutely fascinated by it ( as was I :rotfl: ) and he was very keen to taste it. This was great because he is an extremely ( and I mean extremely) fussy eater and I was sooooo happy that he wanted to try it. Since joining MSE forum I have made a real effort to make more homemade foods and he enjoyed his hm butter on hm bread with hm strawberry jam!! It gives you a real buzz to make and enjoy eating food you have made yourself :) Thank you OS'ers!! :T

    Yes, :)

People have often said that kids will eat things that their parents thought they'd never eat if they were involved in making it themselves.

Something, perhaps, that we should always mention to those whose kids are fussy eaters.

I know how to make home made butter - I'm just not sure why? Surely it's cheaper to buy the cheap stuff than make it?

Because it tastes ssoooooo much better :D You also get buttermilk in addition which makes brilliant scones and Irish soda bread. Some people are able to get reduced cream. I haven't been able to find any since I found out it could be frozen. I think everyone round here must read OS :rotfl:

Well, i have made some tonight.
I think the next batch needs a bit more squeezing, and a touch of salt.
It only took 10 minutes and only a small amount of cream made a decent sized lump of butter.

Well I'm getting a Kenwood chef for Christmas so maybe I'll give it a go. I haven't made butter since I was a kid. I'll test out for myself if it really tastes so much better than Country Life :)

How much cream did you use and roughly how much butter did you end up with? DI dyou mix by hand in a jar or use a mixer?

Oh Wow! I tried making butter with some double cream I'd had standing on the side while the oven was on, - my kitchen gets really warm.

It was ready in about 5 mins flat :D

Shaking a jar in the conventional sense had to be abandoned as my arms just couldn't take it, but I found it much easier to place the jar in the centre of a large, strong, cloth, gather up the corners as tightly as possible then swing the cloth in a gentle hammer action, you get much more shake for a lot less less effort :D
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D
