Ive been dithering between a pvr or a hdd recorder for my mum, and would say that reviews tend to be VERY good for the humax 9200, however the newer 9300 is a more compact size, and there have been significant problems with the fan being too noisy.

Take a look at reviews on amazon etc, even some of the 9200's have fan problems (?faulty batch) but most feel the new compact version is not as good or reliable as the 9200.

I think im going to get a sony HDD, as it has an analogue tuner as well as digital, and my mums digital reception is not great, but if I was going to get a humax it would absolutly be the 9200 based on the reviews ive seen and the research ive done.

Humaxdirect even sell a 9200 with 320memory (double the standard 160memory)

Another vote for the Humax. Had the 9200 for over 2 years now and its the best thing we ever did. It replaced Sky+ easily and since the latest updates its better ! Tried a couple of other 'cheaper' makes since we've had it and none even come close. The only other one I'd even consider is the Topfield but I've not seen that in action, but most reviews seem to rate it. :T

    SKY+.

And no I'm not mad. Get it on the basic £15 a month subscription. You get a far far better choice of channels and there's not a single PVR that is as good as Sky + and in the first year, the cost is equal.

    Sky+ for 1 year = £180. Humax for life of product = £119. That's two-thirds of the cost.

Can the Sky+ box record two channels and allow you to watch a third?

It's also my belief that the Sky+ box stops working as a PVR if you stop paying subscription? In which case, a Sky+ box would have cost me over £700 in the time I've owned my Humax.

Good point stompa, but not until 2011...until then she is stuck with a cr&p communal council aerial in the loft space of the flats, and digital reception is very poor and inconsistant....no ITV, channel 4 or 5, which have all her favourite programmes (apart from jugde judy!?!) takes allsorts!

Im thinking that with a bit of luck the council may have to upgrade it come 2011, as they dont allow tennants to have their own aerial or sky dish, then she may get a humax..

Sorry for going off topic, and great to see that Humax have finally addressed the fan problem.

I can't believe just how wrong anyone can be!

You have clearly never heard of TIVO. The original and still unsurpassed.

Can you tell me where I can get a Humax 9200T or 9300T for £119? I'll buy every single one they've got. Does that also include a free aerial upgrade which many people will need?

A Humax can only allow you to record two and watch a third if it's on the same MUX as the two being recorded. However I can record 2 and watch a third on the built in freeview in the TV.

And there's a far wider amount of channels on Satellite, even taking out the subscription ones.

In addition, with the increase in HD broadcasts, the very last thing I'd want to be doing this year is buying a PVR that doesn't support HD.

I've had a Humax 9200T (freeview) for a long time. I've had very few issues (missed recordings here and there) but a mine was a factory refurb after all.
I highly recommend the more recent Humax 9300

Cymru78 - although I'm on my 3rd Humax 9200T and all have had freezing problems, I'm tempted to put it down to reception, 4 flats each sharing one ariel can't help.

By the time my 9200T kicks the bucket, Sony or Panasonic will have FINALLY released a DVD Recorder/HDD/Freeview hybrib which has TWO digital tuners, making solo dvd players, recorders, freeview boxes ancient history! Who want's all these boxes under the telly anyway? ;)

You can try and sell Sky+ on channels, sure...but it really can't compete with the humax on price.

Another vote for Hummy btw - best bit of kit I've bought in a long time. Very pleased to read about that fan update - my faith is restored.
