I have accidentally gained a mother and it's kittens.. help

A female cat has chosen me to assist in the raising of her offspring :)

She has been coming to my house & I've been feeding it; unbeknown to me, it had a little family stashed away. To cut a story short, the female today decided to bring it's babies to me one by one... & there are more out there

For the time being I am willing to provide her and her brood a home. I do, already own an adult female, who may I add, isn't best pleased.

Anyway, circumstances are such & I could really do with advice and tips. It's been years since I've had to deal with youngsters :o

I think the kittens are maybe 2-3 weeks old.

  • I dont know if there is anything specific you ned to do except provide them with a warm place to sleep and plenty of food for the mum - except maybe start to think about looking for homes for the kittens. I am sure some others willl be along soon with more specific advice.

Good luck, the cat clearly trusts you to bring her kittens to you!
  • She has been coming for about 2 weeks. I did have suspicions that she was either pregnant or had a litter somewhere.

The main issue at this very moment is: she brought another kitten home about 7:30pm. She carried it in, dropped it & unfortunatly it scurried off back outside. She hasn't really attempted to seek it out again since. I've scoured my garden, but I can't find it. I'm so stressed about it & can't get it off my mind now. I'm seriously hoping it will be ok.

Aww she must have trusted you enough to show you her family. To be honest you need to phone an animal charity for advice, they will be able to advise you if your not sure on anything, but remember they get bigger and more mobile so please do whats best for her and the kittens and phone the CPL today.

Unless there are predaters about, the kittens will be fine feeding off of their mother for now, although they may need a warmer place to sleep if it gets very cold in the evenings.

Is there any sign of the other kitten today?

The weather is going to get colder over the weekend so if she isn't in somewhere warm already it would be a good idea to try to get her inside somewhere safe.

Good luck, she obviously knows where to go to be looked after :)

Did she bring the kitties inside? Or is she outdoors with them?

I think it would be best if she was indoors, perhaps in a spare room, with a nice hidey cardboard box bed, a litter tray, and plenty of food!

Re the kitty that ran off.. is there any chance mum cat intercepted it and brought it back to the house?

Bless - she must really trust you to bring her babies to you :)

ETA - A spare room would be ideal, as would keep her away from your resident cat
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

  • Good news OH found 3rd baby this afternoon, safe & sound hide under a rose bush :)

Mother & babies doing well in the comfort of home.

Just taking things day by day at the moment, but will be telephoning a charity a.s.a.p. certainly need them all checking over and asking about neutering too.

I'll keep everyone updated, and thanks for the kind words.

I've got them in my front room, with my own cat living upstairs for the time being.

My sis in law boards for Cat protection. They have people all over the country who do this kind of stuff and they will fetch mum and babies and get them checked out.
I would suggest you do this straight away before you all get too attached.
