If you don't have an "advance overdraft" set up and a debit comes in exceeding your account balance you might get stung for a £35 fee for the "instant overdraft" plus £25 for the month for using it - even if you have not requested an overdraft - or a £35 fee for them to bounce the item - so make absolutely sure the balance will always be positive or the £100 gift will disappear very quickly.

I'm not going to use the account (save for the deposits to fulfil the £100 criteria) so I don't envisage this will be an issue.

:hello: YorkshireBoy. Im expecting my 100.00 A+L payment during the next few weeks, T+Cs have been complied with, final condition is that account must be still open when the cashback is paid.

In your opinion is it safe to apply to Abbey now to transfer my SO and DDs + Main income out of A+L with me merely meeting A+L funding requirements until the 100.00 is paid or if it was you would you keep everything with A+L until the 100.00 is paid.
  • Sounds a bit cheeky tbh  Transfer some minor account if you have one?

    Yes.

How close are you to the 15 week point? I would imagine the Abbey offer would be open for a while yet, but if you're within 2-3 weeks of the 15 week point you could ring A&L Customer Relations (the 0116 number on their website under complaints) and try to hurry them along?

I haven't decided whether I'm going for the Abbey account yet. It seems to have a few too many conditions for me, and 5 months is a long time to mess around for £100.

Plus, if I'm in for a penny I may as well be in for a pound and get them to match a £10K O/D held elsewhere. However, they won't give a 12 month 0% O/D on the £100 account (only 4 months for the switching duration), which means I have to open two current accounts.

Added to this is the fact that I've always promised myself I'd never use a switching service for DD's.

The jury's still out for me.

Just that my main income got switched to A+L. ;) Other than that I would be quite happy to use my Nationwide account as a switch out account for the second time in 4 Months.

100.00 A+L payment should get made sometime in December, 50.00 Cashback site payment was made very quickly. :j

For people taking up the Abbey offer :- one thing to be aware of when you use their switching service is that you cannot choose which direct debits get switched and which do not. The bank account change instruction gets sent to all companies that you have a direct debit agreement with on your old account. I suppose it's possible to quickly switch back any you didn't want changed but this is extra work and you might run into an overdraft that you didn't expect if there is uncertainly about which account the direct debit will be taken from.
  • I'll second what Graham1 has said there!! And to be honest, in hindsight the potential of earning £100 is not not worth it for me to switch to Abbey.

As stated earlier in this thread, I got into a bit of a mess because Abbey sent me an email saying that they couldn't offer me the qualifying overdraft account and would give me a Basic account. But if I didn't follow it up, they wouldn't do anything. So I didn't and thought that was the end of it.

But, little known to me until a week or so later when I started getting letters through, they'd been busy setting up my new overdraft account and transferring all my standing orders and direct debits!! Now, when I've switched in the past, I at least get some kind of correspondance to say "This is your list of outgoings, is this correct? Please let us know that it's ok to transfer these". I didn't get any of that from Abbey and they just went headlong into transferring everything!!

Unfortunately they half transferred my standing orders, so created new ones in the Abbey account, and that cash went out of my old account as well!! Bear in mind, I only found this out because I rang up to chase up why I'd received a letter for telephone banking when I didn't even know I had an account. Anyway, had those standing orders gone through fully (managed to cancel them) I'd have overpaid on my regular savings account and no doubt got into trouble there.

For the last week I've been chasing around all my direct debit companies and making sure that they've got the correct details, which is a hassle I could've done without. But hey, I'll put that one down to experience!

I've closed the account now and am hopeful that's the end of it. But I'm more hopeful than expectant!

Overall experience - the people I dealt with in branch were very good and helped me sort the mess out, and they generally had a good customer service attitude. But for me (and it is only my personal experience), Abbey do seem to have real system issues and the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing.

  • I've switched to Abbey using this offer after having no end of troubles with my current bank, who I'll be glad to see the back of.

My application took a bit longer than usual because of CIFAS protection I have but happy that I can start over and I'll hopefully get the £100 in a few months. The staff at Abbey were really helpful and they've kept me informed when I couldn't have a decision straight away.

Just waiting to hear whether they'll give me a credit card and match my balances so that I can properly get myself back on the road to recovery.

Which is your "current bank", as a matter of interest? - if it's not a personal question! It's always interesting to find out who's cr#p in different people's opinions!
Expect the worst & hope for the best...
