I would like to thank Philip Bradfield for his reporting of the PMS story today...and also Sam McBride ....Without this forum and the Newsletter reports, I would feel completely isolated.

I think Harry and Margaret Hume deserve a lot of credit for being brave enough to 'go public' in the interview they did for today's Newsletter article.I think they were extremely open and honest about their personal involvement and their experience to date...I don't know how they are managing to cope with their own worries right now, but to see and be aware of the personal suffering of so many elderly people in their local community and senior citizens associations, must surely be an added responsibility and bring extra pressure during an already very stressfull time.

I think that David Thompson-his personal view on the situation and his explaination of how the current PMS crisis is affecting his family circle -also deserves a lot of credit. There must be many other families in the same position right now.

It cannot have been an easy decision for these people to tell their stories.

    Thank you one and all.

I am appalled by this case of hardship referred to by Betrayed. Has this old lady no family or friends?

If what Betrayed is claiming is true I for one am willing to buy her (or lend money for the purpose if she prefers) home heating oil.

Betrayed; please respond. If what you are saying is true this old lady's life is at risk. If we can't or won't help each other in a situation such as this we are as bad as those who caused this problem.

1 This lady does have relations and friends and I know she has refused help from them.
2 What I am saying is true.
3 She is like many others, independent. Prepared to suffer rather than take any offer of help or charity.

All of the people I have posted about I know about personally.
Best way to treat them all equally would be get some payment from the funds
    held by the Administrator.
Could the Assembly with emergency legislation not be able to provide for that ?
As Sammy Wilson said this morning on radio..hopefully something will be done
before the bigger creditors pull the plug.
As things stand with the forthcoming High Court action that is a possibility.
I am now thinking that the Administrator's long wait for Government support may have been in vain and other possibilities should have been looked at.

Seems we are now begging Banks to take us over.

Thanks for your offer Lester. Seems more practical that the suggestion by another poster saying that she should get into bed with her minister.

I got the following information from a reliable source last night about a lady I don't know personally.

Another lady in contact today - 87 - penniless -cannot even afford to send letters.

Such are the limited funds available to PCI that they have had to limit their wish list on church house refurbishment to just under £6m as specified in the general assembly minutes from 2009. Seems they can raise funds when they need to for other matters.

"In consultation with the Design Team we are proposing an Amended Phase 1 Scheme of £1,811,949 inclusive of VAT, Professional Fees and VAT on Professional Fees as outlined in Appendix 3 of the Supplementary Report. Such work to commence, subject to approval by the General Assembly, on completion of the external stonework at the beginning of 2011. This would be part of a phased complete internal refurbishment scheme which has been costed, at current levels, at £5,845,000.00 inclusive of building works, fittings + furniture, VAT, Professional Fees and VAT on Professional Fees. The complete internal refurbishment scheme would include Amended Phase 1, Assembly Hall, Minor Hall, Concourse & associated first floor works for Church/Conference use and second floor office refurbishment"
  • Believe me - Churches will ALWAYS be able to raise money for the things they WANT to do!! Have proved that time and time again and in many different situations!! WANT to do the thing - the money will be found!! This is true of the LOCAL congregations and of the central Church!!
But when it's a case of DON'T want to the thing will be starved of cash - seen it before, will see it again!!
Not surprised that PCI is being asked to put it's hand in it's pocket!!
Where will the money come from - it cannot come from congregations but it COULD be borrowed against the assets of PCI.
Where did the almost, I think, £2 million whihc has just gone up in smoke at Union College come from? It wasn't "levied" on Congregations the way that the Church House building project is. Don't know WHERE PCI would find money but it needs to be found!! Notice that "a Church spokesman" has said that any package will be given "careful consideration" which is what everyone is doing while PMS savers are getting increasingly desperate!!
By the way, stop BLAMING Ministers for this - many of them are caught as badly as the rest of you. I made a comment in another post which no one WANTED to pick up on - many Church Treasurers encouraged their Committees to withdraw money from PMS thus participating in the run!!
  • btw - did anyone else have any trouble getting the News Letter one year on edition?

I hear some places were sold out....
