Probably? I don't mean to be rude but I see at least one customer a day who wants to haggle, and the manager always has the same response - if giving £10 off will go from a flat to a sale with Norton/Office/PC Performance then ok, but if it's a flat laptop, or a laptop with just Norton/Office then no.

I wasn't meaning to doubt your word! I was musing really and confirming what you were saying as I looked back at what we've bought and the discounts we've got. Bad wording perhaps but I was actually agreeing with your point!

    What's PC performance?

The PC we bought was a package of monitor, PC and printer. They knocked the shelf price of the printer off the package - was about £40 I think. I can't recall what software it had on it but we have only ever used free security programmes so Norton would have been deleted straight away had it been on there, and I certainly would not buy it as a free standing programme!

Some stupid service that they sell you if your machine goes wrong the earth is promised and they will fix it at your house, everytime I used it they had to send my machine away, They will also once a year defrag and scandisk your machine for you

Not worth the £ in my opinion

Oh, we haven't had that then! :D So that wasn't the reason for the 'discount'!

Although the tesco one is a bit of a shambles they do fix your machine in your house

    DVD Writer failes
Ring Tesco iQon (Irish computer maker)
Send Engineer who diagnoses the fault
Sends report to iQon in Ireland
iQon send authorisation to depot in london to send a part to manchester
engineer comes back and fits it

2 weeks!! even then they put a dual layer writer in instead of a single layer drive :D

I'll wait 6 months as I already have a working vacuum cleaner. The only reason to get a new one was because the wife likes them. He will remember as I will remind him!

With all the best will in the world that seems pretty daft - especially as you don't know for sure if he'll still be working there/that day and even if he is, I doubt he'll care - he just works for them. It's like cutting your nose off to spite your face.

I got a 15% off an 80 gig classic iPod about a month/6 weeks ago by just collaring the manager of our local Comet and asking him his best price - he was lovely and even threw in a free charger on top of that!

Was very happy with my recent service from Currys. I was after a 19" Samsung LCD for the bedroom, I had seen it £40 cheaper online. I asked in a friendly manner if they price matched, they said no, but could offer me a Monster HDMI cable at 50% off :rotfl: , I declined, and continued to mooch around the store, 5 mins later a lad ran up to me and said they could price match after all.

I find being polite, and on occasion flirting like mad can get me a good deal, although it didnt work when buying an Ipod speaker dock, as I "annoyed" the manager with my tunes belting out at full blast, though I noticed a few customers having a boogie in the isles. :j

Am looking forward to a good haggling session soon, as I need to buy about 3Ks worth of electricals.

I was in Tesco earlier. I told them that I shop there every week and spend bucket-fulls and therefore expect them to give me a discount of at least 10%.

They told me where to go. Can I complain?

LOL if i hear " but i spend 1000's of pounds in B&Q" agian i'm going to

I had pretty much the same experience in Currys on Sunday as the OP.

Went in to buy a Dyson, as Currys have a 25% off if you trade in your old vacuum cleaner. Now I have not intention of letting then have my old vacuum cleaner, as I will use this for cleaning the car.

I explained to the salesman that I wanted to buy the Dyson with the 25% discount and I have the cash on me and would buy here and now, but I did not want to trade in my old cleaner as both me and him know that they just get thrown away

Why, precisely, should you get 25% off for no reason or sacrifice on your part, precisely? How do you know they get thrown away?

God, Martin has a lot to answer for.
  • Could you not buy a broken vacuum from a car boot sale or something for a few quid and trade that in?

Before I moved into finance I spent a year or so as a salesman with an electrical company - wont say which one but it went bust a few years back anyway.

I have to be frank and agree with the post about PC World.

As a salesman I knew where I would make money on commision and where I would not. Also if I sold something without an extended warrenty it went against me as a certain % of my personal turnover had to be warranty. So if someone ased me for 10p off a washing machine and it had no extra commision and they did not want to cover it there is no chance they'd get a penny off! In fact neither me nor the manager would really want the sale at all. Its to do with the really tight margins and in many cases real losses in sales.

I agree you should always ask but dont be offended with no's.

Andd my understanding with Dyson is that they only reimburse the store on the condition that the old cleaners are taken - basically a way of increasing their market share by making sure the old ones arnt still in circulation.

Hope this gives a little bit of insight - btw, i hated the industry so im not condoning them it was really pressurised!
