Sellers often use the p&P charges to cover the ebay/paypal costs (though technically they shouldn't).

I also think a lot of sellers inflate their P&P costs to ensure they get a decent overall price especially when items have a low start.

Unfortunately nowadays with the stars playing such a prominent part in auction visibility it is a very dim seller that over inflates to an extent where they start to get marked down heavily.

It Is More Than 40p.... I was charged £10. He paid Royal Mail £2.53. That is £7.47 that I have paid extra. Ok that doesn't include packing, which of been a couple pence more. But it's still over £5 i'm out of pocket. I think £5 is enough to complain about. Plus it is just plain cheeky

Okay, so 40p was an example of it 'not being that much'

Ebays terms and conditions state that P&P includes postage, packaging and handling. So, for each item the packaging and handling was valued by the seller at £3.06 - not sure what handling constitutes - photos, listing, answering queries, packaging, taking to post office  Probably doesn't even make the minimum wage.

There is no weight band for £2.53 so I will assume that they sent the item for £2.51 which is the weight band for a 1st class packet in the weight range 501-750g. Therefore if they had sent them separately it would have cost them 2 lots of £1.94 (weight band 251-500g) = £3.88, so they saved a massive £3.88-£2.51=£1.37.

I still don't think it is worth a negative - but you must do 'cos you don't want to drop it.

Do let us know what you finally decide to do.

ps - don't forget you were happy with the price to start with, you made the decision to bid.

  • I quite like this seller's explanation of Packaging/Handling Fee. No doubt buyers still mark him down on his Postage and packaging charges 'cos the cost of the stamps will be less than what they paid.

I sell a lot of stuff on ebay. This is the way I always charged for my P&P...
Weight the item then find out how much the post office charge. Then I round up to the next whole pound. This usally covers packing cost but somethimes I lose out. But I keep my cost down and have a nice round number for easy math. I don't charge £3 to put something in an eveolpe and stop at the post office on the way to work. 5 mintues.
It doesn't take any longer or cost more to handle another item. I'm paying someone another £3 pound to seal another evelope which they didn't do.

Fair enough, that is your own personal chosen business model.

As I said before, when you originally bid on the items you were happy with the price you paid – now you are not happy. You may be selling on Ebay for fun, but they might be doing this to make a profit – profit is not a dirty word – selling on Ebay is a hobby for some people but a business for others.

Your seller obviously values their time and charges for it, they may not ‘stop at the post office on the way to work’. You did not pay them £3 to simply seal an envelope – see my previous post on Ebay’s definitions of P&P – that £3 is for much more.

By not offering you a discount and by putting the items in one envelope they have only made an additional £1.37 out of your transaction.

I think you need to put that into perspective – if you are that bothered ask them for the £1.37.

You said yourself you ‘hate to leave negative feedback’, so don’t, move on – you’ll feel better for it.

    lol

I never thought of this but it is possible but it isn't very honest. They will only have proof of postage for one item. This proves leaving negative feedback is not the worst thing I could do.

funkyfunkymonkey thank you your opinion and views on how to price postage. I don't total agree on the figures you come up with. But i guess everyone values there time differently, handling and packing cost can differ. But the cost isn't reason it bothers me it's the cheekyness of it. They refused to combine the postage so should of sent the items sperately.
