If OE needs setting up then head over to the other techy forum ..

top of the page, Technical questions about the site. In there you'll find a thread titled Terrierlady - Outlook Express...
All the details on setting an OE account up are in there.

DVD RECORDERS - WHAT FORMAT IS MOST POPULAR
My son has recently sent me a DVD of his travels and wants me to copy it for his friends to see. I know some DVD players will not play copies, some are "- "and some are "+". Which format should be used to copy the DVD.
My friend can copy to either?

I signed up for Tiscali 512k and had no problems with it, but wasn't downloading much so i downgraded to the 256k and still having no problems with it.

The problems that people have been experiencing are usually high pings when playing games (still not resolved) and slow speeds which is apparently slowly being resolved. They seemingly oversold and had too many people using the network in certain areas so it dropped to snail pace.

From their forums people seem happy to slag them off before finding out what the problem is as the support centre is in India and the staff just reel off a list of things to try rather than having the network knowledge infront of them to find out if there is a network problem.
Quite often people will complain about this that and the other when it's a compatibility problem between their modem and hardware (and expect Tiscali to know what they're using when they order) and some times a bad line which BT need to sort out.

No matter which ISP you choose you can end up with problems due to the other people you share with as it's not an individual pipe to your door. If you have a contention rate of 50:1 and half of those people are constantly downloading large files etc etc then it's going to have a knock on effect to the rest of the users.

If you do go with Tiscali and have any problems use their forums as the helpdesk is pants and an 0870 number

Thanks schm-gypsy will take on board all you say, it was all the bad posts that were putting me off i must say, so will go and have another look at tiscali.

You have to sign a 12 mth contract though to get the free modem etc, that puts me off a bit as if they not much cop after you sign up you are pretty much stuck with them then, i could go buy the stuff but so many offering to give it to you so i'm gonna take my time and av a look a wots on offer but still i did like the price of tiscali suits my budget.
    cheers

It is possible to recover your emails if the .dbx files have not been erased in Outlook Express.

In Outlook Express you need to create a new folder (call it, say, MSE) then open (i.e. look in) the folder even though it is empty.  Close Outlook Express.

Use the Windows search utility to locate MSE.DBX which is actually the new OE folder.  Delete the dbx files from that folder and replace them with the dbx files that contain the old emails (you can identify these by searching for the Inbox.dbx file, the older ones will be large whereas the new/empty Inbox.dbx will be around 137kb).  Once you have substituted the old dbx files in place of the new ones you can open Outlook Express and find your email again.

Note that this does not work with folders that you created yourself as that technique requires that you create a new folder of the same name, view it, close OE, delete the new one then substitute if with the older one.

I don't advise anyone to delete the older ones until they successfully replace them into OE.

Many people have technology questions on the periphery of MoneySaving - yet without understanding how technology works, much money saving is lost.

If the answer isn't forthcoming here, 'the Gadget Detective' runs free help on his site

    https://www.gadgetdetective.com

    I was recently recommended

    https://www.tomshardware.com

an american site, which i've found to be an amazingly helpful and navigable site for all my techie probs. Easy to register.
