Many people have technology questions on the periphery of MoneySaving - yet without understanding how technology works, much money saving is lost.

Chat member Ra suggested this board and as a technophile has volunteered that where possible he'll try and answer your techie questions (though he does ask other technology lovers to help too)

If the answer isn't forthcoming here - a very nice chap called Fevzi who i know from my work on LBC radio is 'the Gadget Detective' and runs free help on his site

    Hi Ra,
Had 'Techno Man' out to set up C.D. player thingy on my computer. After £40s ++ worth of his time, it was getting late, so I said I'd wait for the download of whatever it was he'd left loading! He left me instructions.....but it still wouldn't work!! :'( Real Player logo keeps flashing @ me every time I get on-line. Does this cost if I register with them & will the sound be installed?

There is no sound when I try to play a C.D. but the sound works for other things.

Hope you or other 'Techy' can help......you may have 'sussed' that I'm not that way inclined myself, ;D so can you please keep it simple?

    Soodew xxxx

If the sound works on other stuff, but just not when you play CDs, then the problem is most probably down to a loose cable inside your PC.

There is a little wire that runs from your CD drive and plugs onto the soundcard... If your techy man didn't spot this, then I suggest you ask him for your money back.

I may be wrong, and that might not be the problem, but that's what I'd guess at.

Whether you'd be confident delving inside your PC to find out is another matter. Depending where you work, there's always likely to be a PC bod there who'll help out for a few beers - cheaper than calling out an engineer!

    Dear Paul,
Thnx for your advice. I do recall something 'Tech. Man' said re loose wire & him working on it. Unsure whether he was successful as it was some time ago.
There isn't an icon to click on to re accessing C.D. player, this is why I wonder if the download for such wasn't completed correctly @ the time.
Should I try Real Player, does it cost & how do you do it?

I don't work in an office & my P.C. is home based.....so don't have anyone to help....

Realplayer is a horrible piece of spyware, so dont worry about it. all you really need it Winamp 5 (free from the winamp site) or Mediaplayer that came with your pc

Paul could be correct in that the cd player could be unplugged, but out of interest, if you go Control Panel > sounds and audio devices, is your CD player set to mute/has it had the slider volume turned right down? Might be worth checking before you start taking the case off again.
  • Hi there,
Do you have a headphone socket on the front of your CD DRIVE?

If so plug some headphones in to check the CD is being read ok and playing.

What operating system are you using? Windows 98, windows 2000, windows XP?

Can the free Yahoo email be configured to run in Outlook Express.

    alared,

in short, yes it can. When you log into yahoo mail. Go to Mail Options (top right under where it shows your email address), then Pop Access and Forwarding (middle list, second down),

then where it says 'Web and Pop Access', there is a clickable link next to this in brackets saying 'Pop Settings'. Click this and it gives you all the info you need to configure Outlook Express. Below this info yahoo have written user guides to configuring five of the main email clients (OE being one). Click the guide and follow the help - its very straightforward.

If you get any probs, give me a shout.
