I have lost all saved emails in Outlook following a "non-destructive system recovery" on Saturday. All other data files were scattered around but not lost but every search for the missing emails comes to nothing.

Nothing new has been loaded or saved since the system recovery so I am hoping that my stuff is hidden somewhere, has not been overwritten and can be recovered.

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

do you use Outlook or Outlook Express?

If you use Outlook do a search for *.pst and add all the pst files to your profile (control panel, mail, add personal folder)

If you use Express do a search for *.dbx go to tools - options - maintenance - store folder, and point it to each of the folders where dbx's were found.

If your lost mails turn up you'll have to look into restoring them back to where they came from

If still no good after following s_g advice, try searching on internet for data recovery programs. Some probably do a trial period. If you have access to another computer probably best to use that to search/download and leave yours alone so as to reduce the risk of overwritting stuff on yours.

I remember someone on the Whatlaptop forum getting advice after accidently deleting some pictures but they never said if they ever recovered them. The post was here:

SG you have saved my life!!

The *.dbx search located them all but I can't follow the rest of your instructions, i.e. if I stay in the search window the Tools menu gives Folder Options but there is no mention of Maintenance etc...

So far I have copied them to CD and this would be ok but what program do I use to read them? Ideally I would like to send them back to Outlook Express (which is yet to be setup following the recovery) I am using XP if that makes a difference.

By the way, I spent 53 minutes on the phone to HPs tech dept yesterday and they were adamant that the files were lost !!

Hope you can help a little more but if not serious thanks for getting me to this point.

    Anj

(Thanks too to Onzey, but as you can see I didn't need to search too far :))

don't get too excited yet... the ones you found 'may' only contain the mails you can see in OE.

I'm mental at work at the mo so i don't have the time to do a full explanation right now but i'll sort it out for you later

    quick pointer...

the tools > options > maintenance .. instruction was for OE and not the 'find' box

Cheers, waiting is not a problem.

    If it helps:

OE needs setting up (since the system recovery) and I haven't done it for fear of messing up chances of finding lost emails, so cannot access tools from there (I think!)
