MONEY MORAL DILEMMA. Would you dent someone’s car if they blocked you in?

  • No, I wouldn't damage anyone's car deliberately. In my area though residents do get fed up with the commuter parking and box them in as a form of discouragement. They don't really care cos their cars are oldish. We have been offered residents parking but that costs even for just one car and, at least, all the cars parked serve to slow the through traffic down. I like the system they have around Wimbledon where the traffic warden just operates at lunchtime for an hour or so. Cheap to administer and stops the commuter parking pretty well completely.
  • Interesting reading, I guess this is what keeps my OH in business, He is a paintless dent removal technician. :T

I used to work in an office with no parking except on the street. I used to park in a bay infront of my shop window so I could keep an eye on my car, there was one woman that used to live in the flats opposite, and she would reverse park into spaces, and bump both cars either side of hers to get into the tiny space..... I, on nuumerous occassions ran out and told her (and others) that I had just witnessed her bumping my car... she didnt care and just laughed and walked off

  • If someone blocks you in in this way then of course the person in front or behind must have had more room (in front or behind them) in the first place in order to block you in. So when you parked your car they must have seen that the space they were pulling into either wasn't big enough for the row of three or they could have moved further forward or back.

In my opinion there's no room for such rude and thoughtless behaviour on today's busy roads and you would be quite within your rights to do the job of the cosmos and deliver some instant karma. You could try cutting the handbrake cable on the car in front and simply push it forwards a smidge (prefrably onto some double yellows for that double whammy of a parking ticket as well). Or if you have a Chelsea tractor with some bull bars then I guess you'd be ok just forcing your way out. But I certainly wouldn't risk damaging my car.

Just to push this hypothetical situation a little further. If I needed to use my car in an emergency (perhaps if I was a doctor on call or had a pregnant wife whose waters had broken) then I would have absolutely no compuction in breaking the passenger window and releasing the handbrake (no time to get under the car and cut the cable!)

Thats interesting that the police will send a traffic warden out - the police take ages to respond to burglaries etc where I live so I'd be interested to see if someone did turn up to check on parking ;) .

Depends how much of a rush I was in - I'd be furious but prob wait and give them a good cursing if I had time, but if I needed to be somewhere then I would bump them out of the way - it's their own inconsiderate parking thats caused the problem.

What do/would people do when someone blocks your driveway tho? I always park my car in the drive and every single weekend my next door neighbours relatives visit and block my car in, or stop me getting back in my drive if Im out. I'm fed up having to knock on their door and ask them to move the car from in front of my drive...I've seen them move out of the way - I drive off and then they put it right back in front of my drive again - it 'drives' me bonkers ! ....Once one of them even sighed, rolled his eyes and said the immortal words "women drivers".......argh !!!!!!! I get on with my neighbour so I don't wannt to cause an argument, and you can't nudge someones car out of the way in this instance!
  • Is it the same thing when someone blocks you in sideways, yesterday I parked in a carpark in a space that wasn't right as the 2 side cars were each 1 metre right so as there were no other spaces I parked. W

when I came back after 2 hours I found that those 2 cars had gone and the new car on my right had purposely blocked me in thinking I could not distinguish where the lines were and although there was space on their right!! I had to climb over my sons carseat to get in.
  • I would beep my horn and see if the owners turn up to let me out. If not I wouldn't "nudge" the car out of the way

I would "RAM IT OUT OF THE WAY"!!!!
  • I would obviously try to avoid denting their car, but if I did, tough on them! I'd also leave a rude message on the windscreen (would be tempted to use superglue to stick it to the windscreen as well)

some of these replies have made me chuckle!
For me this would most likely happen when I have to go and sign on at jobcentre as its the only time I park in town not in a multistorey as its cheaper for the sort time it takes.
There are usually traffic wardens nearby so I'd prob try to find them to see if they could help but as I have a toddler I wouldn't be able to hang around for too long in which case i'd look at the time on the tickets to see which one arrived last and bump them (hopefully it would be the one behind as my back bumper is already a bit scratched!)

You can't sit there and honk your horn if you're not moving as it's illegal.
  • it is illegal to block another driver in, as someone mentioned earlier so I would call the police and have them towed. If it was isolated thou I would probably bump them for revenge!
