Yes you can but be aware they're very very busy at the moment so it's unlikely you'll get any money from them for a month or two.

You'd still get it back. Usually when you find employment, you'd be refunded via your pay packet - HMRC would inform the employer the payment was due.
  • Hi,
Im in a similar situation, I was employed full time until September when my company went into administration.
I claimed Job seekers allowance for 3weeks until I luckily found work as a self employed contractor, albeit on a much lower salary.

Question I need to ask, am I able to claw back some of the ludicrous amount of tax I paid throughout the year when I was 'PAYE' ?

Need all then money I can get right now...

    Cheers
    Darren

Usually you can only put in a claim if you're unemployed otherwise its repaid through your tax code or in your case, offset against your tax bill/refunded when you put in your S/A form however there's nothing to stop you putting in a claim and seeing what happens.

As I said though, they're very busy. They're at least 2 months behind because I've usually had a tax bill by September when I've sent in my SA forms for them to calculate.
  • If you apply for a tax repayment, HMRC will send you a cheque. They cannot instruct your new employer to refund you through your new PAYE.

  • Also, forgot to mention that there are separate teams dealing with Self-Assessment and tax repayments so there may not necessarily be that much of a delay. The busiest period is usually April time when the new P60s are issued.

  • I wouldnt hold your breath.
I ended up chasing mine for 8 months, I had my cheque but 2 weeks later they decided
they miss calculated my refund by £515!
They are now chasing me for money because they got my adjustments wrong!

Even though I provided all the details they needed.
This on top of an overpayment in working tax credits have put me into serious debt, now that I am unemployed.
