delivery is a bit steep though. Never used them myself because I'm very fortunate to have a very good garden centre locally that sells a huge range of seed potatoes loose so I can pick and choose. I am considering ordering some seeds from him as they are reasonably priced.

    Hi everyone

I bought 3 lots of seed tatties last year and had mixed results - Rocket (first early), Blue Edzell (first early) and Carlingford (2nd early). The first 2 were purely container grown, the latter was half and half.

Long story short, the Rockets were absolutely fantastic, beautiful taste and by far the best crop. The B Edzell's were as expected, I enjoy them, but they're nothing stunning (and such a pity they lose their colour!!). I was sorely disappointed with the Carlingfords, and won't go back to them I'm afraid, they just didn't do anything very well.

I'm heading out to get Rockets this weekend, I have a greenhouse over in my fathers garden that I get to use for growing goodies, can't wait for this year - I grew tatties, tomaotes, mangetout, broccoli, salad last year, but this will be my first year doing it for MS motives!

Is there anywhere you can get just a few seed potatoes? Whenever I look on website they wasn to send me 20odd tubers but this is my first time and I was going to a few growbags as I dont' have much room and I was planning to use 2 tubers per grow bag so I dont' need many. Any ideas?

If you have a Wilkinsons shop near you they sell them in packs of 5. You can also order packs of 5 from Thompson & Morgan but the delivery costs make it too expensive unless you're ordering a load of other stuff as well.
    TOP MONEYSAVING TIP

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!
  • Got all my veg & flower seeds yesterday. The only thing I didn't was seed pototoes! Purely because I really can't decide on what to grow them in! I have no idea! I couldn't even find grow bags in B&Q or Wilkos? I can see myself getting confused quite easily! :D

retrocircles, last year we grew our potatoes in large tubs or very large plant pots, and they flourished! In fact, what was recommended by other growers for containers for growing potatoes were the likes of the buckets that Morrisons etc use for their fresh flowers. They used to give them away free if you asked, but I think they've cottoned on to that now and charge for them, but it might depend on your local store.

I'd like to grow potatoes this year but i'm new to it.

I'd like to know - When you grow potatoes (or anything) in buckets, do you need to put holes in the bottom of them so they don't get waterlogged? And do you use gravel at the bottom or just soil?

I knocked holes in the bottom of the bag, just wee ones. Then put in compost.
