Used them for the last 2 years, no problems at all. Bought Pentland Javelin and Arran Pilot this year.

    Hi everyone

I bought some of the B&Q seed potatoes, does anyone know how many potatoes a seed potato grows? I know it isn't an exact science but as there's only 2 of us in the house I don't want to be swimming in spuds, I'm happy to give excess away to friends and family but have limited allotment so don't want to take up too much valuable space growing things for other people :)

Hope this isn't a silly question!

For earlies grown in containers expect average 0.35kg per seed potato, grown in ground a bit more. I dont grow maincrop but I think its about 1kg crop per tuber.

Now just wait for the competitive posters with enormous yields from their crops :)

I bought 4 bags from B&Q for £10. Pentland Javlin, Maris Peer, Maris Piper and Charlotte.

The Pentland Javlin contains 51 potatoes so going by the 0.35kg per seed potato that's 18Kg for £2.50 (and a bit of effort).

The thing is - you don't pick them all at once

Rootle around in the compost and pick out what you need for that day and leave the rest in the ground

It's only when it's late in the year that you need to lift them all before the slugs get them or if you're a farmer taking them all to market!

I tried last year for the first time, we got quite a lot from 3 tubs, but they were pentland javelin and we didnt like them at all. Maybe they are chip potatoes ? they went to mush very easily when boiled. I want lots more this year but not that sort.

    They're ideal for boiling!

My Anya seed potatoes have just been delivered (thanks again to the person that posted the T&M free P&P info in December)... hoorah! Don't know where I'm going to put them all though, it was something like £2.50 for 5 or £4 for 20 so I ordered the 20 :D
    TOP MONEYSAVING TIP

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!
