  • Morning all -

It's a BEAUTIFUL day in Cardiff! Woke up to the sun streaming through the chinks in the curtain... and... more excitingly, a text message from a colleague saying she'll cover my shift today :j :j . She's a flexitime trainee who has to cover a couple of long shifts every fortnight for CPD and has chosen my shift today and another next monday - they're the first shifts she's taken off me since I started so I'm delighted!

However - after 5 back-to-back 12hr shifts flat is a bit pig-sty like. So Monday and Tuesday's lists to work my way through and:

    WM load x2
    ironing
Phone man who's offered a week's work experience to confirm
One hour dissertating (literature review - target two papers)
    Bank (depositing, this time!)
Finish cutting down dead stems on balcony and make sure plants under cover are damp

I think that's enough of a list for today

  • Hey Pink -

Ditto re the wind. I've just nipped out to tackle the plants. One of them required careful retrieval from next door

Decorators have arrived to paint all the communal areas and will then recarpet etc... My nice smart flat will have an equally clean entrance hall as a result - hoorah!

Off to get milk. Will take diving weights, just in case...

  • I thought you might like to share this with me, today of all days! Charlie Chester wrote this while on Sentry Duty. My mother took note of it when he was speaking with Thora Hird in Praise Be in July 1989.

So you've come to the end of your journey, Soldier,
And you say you've been brave and true.
They aren't the qualities I need my friend
Before I can pass you through.
You say that you've merits outstanding in battle
And righteous wars must be won.
But have you had the courage to pray to our Lord
For the sins that you need not have done?
You pause at my challenge, dear Soldier,
Of weapons I've none in my hand,
For I am the Sentry, St Peter,
And this is my Maker's own land,
And to pass to the Life Everlasting,
You must prove beyond word of all doubt,
Whether or no you're our friend or our foe
To find sanctuary here, or cast out.
You're still standing upright, dear Soldier,
You seem not afraid of my quest.
There's no need to answer me, Soldier,
I can see that your soul is at rest.
And for courage and loyalty, Soldier,
In resisiting the Talents of Hell,
We offer not medals, but Peace Everlasting,
So Soldier "Pass Friend, All's Well!"

I find this very moving in our current climate and hope you don't mind me sharing with you.

  • Sorry I can't remember who posted the link for service records for free, but thank you! DB has possibly found Great Uncle Ted in the 3rd Guards Division, and a possible couple more distant "uncles" in the Somerset Light Infantry!
