Old Style Daily Thread; Saturday 8 November

Hi, this is the Daily Thread for today. This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything OS and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an OS natter. The more the merrier!

When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem, we’re a laid back bunch here so you won’t hear any complaints. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” type start does just as well.

Good morning everyone  This is the first time in ages that I've started the Daily, and it reminds me that Pink and I were going to update the Sticky - a job for later today ;)

Busy day today - DH will take the children to swim club and I'll iron and hoover through. I also have a sweetcorn soup to make for lunch. DS is then off to football training, and we're taking DD to look at another 6th form college (no 6th form at her school  ). DD is then out to a friend's to sleep toninght, and DS is off on a business trip to China early tomorrow.

I had a big baking session yesterday - bread loaf, two apple braids (one for a poorly friend), butterfly buns, flapjack, apple pie :T

Whovever asked for how we do dough balls - yes they're small balls of dough, baked, then dipped into garlic butter

catowen - congratulations to your granny :bdaycake:what a long-lived bunch we are on Old Style :D

Belated :bdaycake: to scuzz and Suesy Sue

Have a great day, everyone! I'm off to see if I can get another hour's sleep ;)

N9eav - Well done on the court case hon! and the sweepstakes made me laugh too!
daisychain - the garage are not allowed to fix it, it has to go back to the dealers and they couldn't fit us in til monday afternoon, so my poor OH has to do all his driving to gigs etc this weekend with the warning light on.
Sunnyday - Oh wow, thank you, I am so glad you enjoyed the piccalilli recipe, I didn't make any this year.
redruby - thanks hon, she is moving in this evening.
    Belated hgballoons.gifto susiesue and scuzz
twink - thanks hon, just got to keep our fingers crossed til Monday now
Kaat - oh yes, they are fab done in the slow cooker or as a casserole in the oven.
Dorry - good luck on the job front.
sistercas - I do my shopping check on Supermarket.com and Tescos seems to come up cheapest for me, but they are withdrawing a lot of value stuff and reissuing it under the new label and higher in price!! Asda is only about £10 more usually.
candygirl - I have that knack too, have had for 20 yrs... my success rate is amazing even if I do say so myself!
Jannieannie - hope you feel better soon
congrats.pngto bargain on DH's new job!
Squiggly babes - will post the recipe when I am a little more awake as I will have to type it out first and it has a few ingredients. Worth it though!

I do my dough balls differently as I said yesterday - I make the dough and then put some garlic butter in the centre and then cook.. but I bet they taste nice either way!

This afternoon we are finishing all the things we need to do before J moves in. Am quite nervous really, I am so used to my own space and routines and walking around naked if I want to....*laughs* All that will have to change now I have a lodger... Going to bake hobnobs too as a welcome for her.

    Good morning PP and MSD.

Baking today because we've run out of cakes. Dinner is spaghetti carbonara which is nice and easy; will either have plum crumble or bread-and-butter pudding for afters. Will make both, anyway. I also have a smallish pile of ironing which I hope to get done this morning.

(((Hugs))) to everyone and hope you all have a good Saturday.

    Hello everybody,

Just about to make a strong coffee (arv tea) ;) and then get into the kitchen to prepare some tea. We went to the protest this morning. Nobody noticed my bra was missing. :D The news teams were there as were quite a few police. Must remember to watch the news tonight. Hope it will work. We left before it finished as we had to catch the ferry. I'll keep you all posted. I know how much your all interested. :p:D

After lunch went to YS house to do some more painting. Hope to finish it all off tomorrow as carpet cleaner & pest control is booked for Thursday. Ours is getting done too. Bye Bye spiders. :D Off to Mass at 5pm and back at 7pm. Have to think what to make for tea but it will be something to do with tomatoes.

Moiliere I love carbonara but DH isn't keen.
Hope you all have a great day & <hugs> to those not well. Byeeeeeeeeeeeee

Aussie Lass - I'm interested; I hope your protest works - I get sick and tired of the powers that be thinking they can just keep increasing the cost of essentials as though we've all got tons of money to spare!

I can't imagine what sort of horrific spiders you have there that need pest control! My 'pest control' is my DH with a glass and a piece of card!

Morning all, missed posting y/day as I was up to my eyes with so much to do, The study still isn't finished. Had to put de-humidifier in there to dry the wall that I had to plaster. The curtains were faded a bit so I unpicked them and reversed the material, used the same lining, they are looking brand new for the cost of a reel of cotton and several pricked fingers when re-hemming.

Cleaned 6 brass picture lights and all glass on pictures ready to put back up hopefully on Monday.

Went to Morries to get half price beef joint and some y/s veg. BM and WM on

Must sort out the freezers and make room for all the food I plan to cook for next week, we have 22 staying for the Glaston carnival. DB1 and SiL arive on Thursday for a week. Can't wait to see them.

DB2 and his kids arive on Friday, all 6 of them. Unfortunately he has to return home on Mon as the hosp have to Op on one of the 3 doz Melanoma growths that is getting out of control. He STILL hasn't told his kids that he has it.

I can't send or receive any emails as Onetel have been down for 4 days now, anyone else here having probs with them? I'm loosing patience with them as it seems to happen on a regular basis.

Haven't had time to catch up but congrats and hugs where needed. xx
  • Morning all,

been awake since 5.40am here too. I'm always an earlybird but on a Saturday that's ridiculous, lol!! Oh well, got to study today/tomorrow as I ended up not doing any yesterday cos I had a headache.

PenPen, mmm all that baking sounds lovely! :) I might try something different for a change today!
Diva, thank you hon, that would be great - you can always PM it so I don't miss it :) Good luck with your lodger moving in, hopefully you'll all get used to each other quickly!!!
Mioliere, I was thinking of carbonara too - I got some cheap gammon steaks in Asda the other week & was going to chop 1 up & add it to the sauce to bulk it out a bit, with some extra mushrooms.
Aussie, good to hear from you - there I was eagerly awaiting pics on the international news of braless protestors... And same here on the spider front - one reason I'm glad I don't live out there...!!!!!
Betheebee, you're being busy again then (as always!). Will you have both DB's there at the same time?? That will be something to look forward to. Perhaps you can pull them both aside & have a discussion about telling other people? I know they won't let you tell anyone though :(
Dorry, sorry to hear about the job - hope something else comes up quickly for you.

May dig the BM out of the cupboard & set it off making some sort of sweet dough today, do a batch of Rocky Road too, and maybe some carrot soup for lunch. In fact, might get the BM doing some granary dough in a minute then I can have fresh rolls for lunch too!

(((((hugs)))) for all those needing them.
    Have a good day all.

  • Good morning everyone

I have no idea what's been happening on the daily over the last couple of weeks so I will do a very general :j to anyone with something to celebrate and :grouphug: to those who need them for whatever reason.

I have been ill for the last week. It isn't quite flu but it's more than a cold and I am fed up with having no sleep each night. It's getting better each day, I just wish it would get better a bit faster. :D I have too much to do to be poorly.

Squiggly like you I will need to do some studying today as I have done none at all this last week. I did manage to submit my first assignment though. :T  Just have to wait for the feedback and score now.
Betheebee good luck to your DB for the op next week.
Aussie  Hope the protest worked. Councillors can be a "bit up themselves" - well mine is. Can't stand the man since he sided with the council rather than the residents over residents parking bays in my street. He's supposed to represent us!
MSD good luck with your new lodger. The money will come in handy. I hope your friendship isn't affected by those little niggly annoying habits that we all have but can only see in others, especially when they start living with us. ;):D

OS today I need to get the HM soup out of the freezer for lunch. BM will need to go on and the ironing board will have to come out. DD has said she "might" make dinner today. I need to think of something easy that means she just might want to cook again. :D;)

If I can be bothered, I'm going to wrap up some Christmas presents today. My Christmas gift shopping is pretty much done with the exception of DS who can't quite decide what he wants. This will be the third year in a row that Christmas has been organised and pain(and debt)free. :j

Off to have some tea and cough medicine. :D Have a sunny Saturday. xx

SGUIGGLY, DB1 has told everyone about his prost cancer, it's DB2 who won't tell anyone about his Melanoma. Yes both DB's will be here and my DMum, the four of us haven't been together at the same time for 23yrs.

    Good Morning All

WM on, BM just about to go on to make dough for rolls and then I will jump in the shower. Having a mainly housework and ironing day today.

Yesterday was hard at Nans flat - have bought home her writing bureau (now need to find out how to sort the veneer), an old seive, rolling pin and some pyrex. It was hard seeing all her stuff some of it she had had for over 50 years. At least thats done now.

DD is off to see High School Musical at our little independant cinema and think DS may be going to a skate park with OH - would be nice if I could have the house to myself for a while.

Marinated chicken with cheesey pots tonight - oops havnt got the chicken out of the freezer - best do that now.

    Have a great day.

    morning all

need to blitz the house this morning - with dgs(3) over this week "helping" things have gone a bit awry and will then meet up with dd(19) for a trip to Shepherds Bush. She wants to go to that new shopping centre but I've heard that it's packed, full of designer shops, and no bargains. I'm looking forward to the market and am treating her to pie and mash. dd(19) has questioned the use of the word "treat" but i'm originally a sarf london girl and haven't had proper pie and mash for years.

cooked a free range chicken last night - yellow stickered from an arm and a leg to £1.39 so that's going to reappear in many guises over the weekend.

Go Aussie - I love a protest - no point sitting at home moaning about stuff - disappointingly I can't see any braless pictures - maybe they were censored.
I'm going to feed our children non-organic food and with the money saved take them to the zoo - half man half biscuit 2008
