Great ideas all - do post back here with ideas, or even better, pics! I am now trying to put together a Housebook - basically a clear A5 folder from Rymans, with pages from the DIY diary site I mentioned, working well so far!

Mrs Boo Boo, I read on here that Lynx is called Axe in (I think) Poundshops. There's an entry on Wikipedia.
It's called Axe almost everywhere but in the UK. I know that my husband (who uses Lynx) smells the same as my brothers back in Argentina (who use Axe) :p

  • Just a quick question...

How do you remember how much things are when trying to buy cheapest?? Do you just have to write things down? I don't really do the same shop everytime - I shop a little bit every few days with the occasional big shop every couple of weeks and what I buy really varies. Do I just have to be patient and organised and compare receipts?

Or does anybody have any tricks??

    Also, another quick question..(sorry :o )

I live in Utrecht, Holland and just wondered if there was anyone else out there OSing who might have any tips????
Over here all the supermarkets are quite small and don't really have so much variety (maybe thats why I end up going to different shops all the time!). For example, I eventually found condensed milk in an Asian supermarket, baking powder only comes in small sachets (like instant yeast). I can't find strong bread flour anywhere, except in a very expensive health-food shop. Although I did manage to find semolina flour in the Turkish supermarket.
So if there's anyone out there who wants to swap a couple of more Holland-specific tips, let me know! :hello:

For me getting the information to local offers is easier as my DD has a weekly paper round to boost the money from her round they put in several leaflets a week so i get to browse them before they go out in the paper and seeing as the leaflets are usually delivered the night before offers start i get a head start. However i will only buy an offer if i need it as i went through a stage of gettingit cos we 'might' use it later in the week and it got stupid, cupboards and freezers were heaving but i stillinsisted there was nothing in to eat. Now we are finally seeing the end of those offers and eating from a meal plan to make sure there is no waste or unneccessary buying.

  • I have terrible problems remembering how much things cost in different shops. Sometimes I realise that I've spent more by stocking up in the wrong place when something seemed like a good offer. So I've decided to get something like a cheap address book and list stuff and compare prices.
I go to Tesco's and Lidl's about once a month and mostly use Morrisons as it's nearest. So if I can stock up on cheaper dried and tinned goods it's worth it.
I'm not sure how well this will work with all the price rises though. I know I've put off buying stuff that looks expensive only to find that it's gone up in the other shop though. There are definite variations between the supermarkets though so I'm going to use them to my adavntage

  • Thanks for the replies, I think I will get a small notebook and jot down prices, and maybe save receipts to check (if they're itemised)
I guess you also do remember the most regular things you buy - I can just about remember bread and milk but that's it!

I think I'm slightly sad, cos I remember a lot a prices! Oh what a shameful admission! Obviously I spend way too much time thinking about food!

There are lots of old stylers who have little price books that they keep in their bags, but the way prices seem to be up and down at the mo I'm guessing that these are getting harder to keep up to date.

But keeping reciepts and noting down prices would be a good place to start I should think. Perhaps there is a Dutch equivalent to www.mysupermarket.com that you could look on?

  • Hi all,

I have recently put all the items in my small A-Z note book that I was using as a pricebook, into an Excel spreadsheet.

This means that from now on I only carry one sheet with me, which I can then scribble on, and update to Excel later. Then I reprint. Much easier to read the sheet in the supermarket as it's all visible (rather than pages and pages) and alphabetical.

It means that maybe once a month I print a new sheet and one for MrEL (he doesn't know I'm about to do this :rotfl: ).

If ayone would like a copy of what I use to get them started just send me a PM and your e-mail, I will send you a copy.

It includes the price per KG or Litre as well as the price per 100g / 100ml.
