had the router checked - it isnt a blooming router at all but an access point for just the one computer which is why it isnt working - aaarrghghgh - then cable told me to use the belkin lan i had - just put it straight into the tv and it would work - tried but this turned my computer downstairs off - so now im gonna have to go out and buy another router....

told to get a pc cable psl wireless router netgear - any ideas how much from where? hope it definitely works though if i do - would it be better for me to pay for a computer whizz to do it? anyone know any based in bradford please?

    thanks

I suspect you might not need to buy anything. Can you let us know exactly what wireless equipment you have? I think you might have enough to set up an Ad-Hoc network allowing the PC and laptop to share your broadband connection.

i dont actually have any equipment - when they set my broadband internet connection (telewest) they tried to do this using the netgear i mentioned earlier but they couldnt so they then tried a belkin - this worked but they said i could do it wireless entirely through my box - i didnt need any wires or anything, but, they left the stuff behind....telewest said i could use the belkin straight through the set top box again but that means turning my computer downstairs off as that uses the signal they would use for it.....

    thanks
  • Im a bit confused here prob cause i got the modem and seperate line for my blueyonder.

You say the computer is running wireless for the internet from the set top box so you have wireless signals.

What sort of receiver is the computer is it a usb dongle or pci card to receve the signal.

So i guess that if you independantly connect either the lappy or computer to the wireless connection it works (remember when switching between lappy and comp you need to power down the boxes to reset the MAC address)

But when you try to connect both only one get the signals ??.

Have you got the models numbers of the equipment you have got ??

You mentioned a box with two aerials but you haven't told us what it is? Make and model number?

this is turning into the most confusing thread ever.....

if it's using a Telewest STB you need a wireless broadband router most likely which will enable you to still use your PC downstairs which sounds like it is currently wired into the STB. Then you will have the PC connected to the router, which in turn connects to the STB. Your daughters laptop wil then connect to the wireless part of the broadband router(the aerials). But as Fifer says, one minute you say you have routers/access points then you say you don't have any equipment. Without the make (which you seem to be providing) and the model numbers(which will be written on the bottom of the boxes) it's hard work for anyone to suggest a solution
