i havent the time at the moment to do this but as soon as i do i will get the key off telewest
The key is something you set, it's nothing to do with the broadband supplier. You just need to set all of your wireless devices to the same key. Or turn it off to get started.Happy chappy0 -
If you are using a Netgear router (which it seems like you might be from previous posts), you will be able to turn off the encryption in the router's configuration interface. This is most likely accessible via 192.168.0.1 for Netgear routers. tigermatttomstickland wrote:The key is something you set, it's nothing to do with the broadband supplier. I might be barking up the wrong tree here, but does the OP have a router or is he maybe connecting his existing PC via a bog standard USB wired modem and is now trying to set up an ad-hoc network to share the broadband connection with his daughter's laptop? I think we need to know:
How does the existing PC connect to the internet?
A list of all wireless equipment in the network (is it just the USB adaptor and the wireless laptop or is there more?)?
Is there an existing wireless network and if so, what is it used for, how was it set up and what security (if any) is used? There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.

Hi Magoogy,
Wireless can be quite frustrating, and don't worry, like everyone, you are enduring the beginning labours of becoming a full fleged techie.
Anyhow, let's start with what kind of Router you have, and what kind of laptop you bought for you daughter? With this information, I should be able to help you out a little better.0 -
Don't panic - setting up routers and modem can be complicated and not getting it first time doesn't make you thick!!
The "router page", is probably a reference to essentially a web page your router creates to allow you to change the settings. It is viewed in your browser, i.e. Internet explorer or Firefox. It sounds like you're half way there already - in internet explorer, try typing that address again, but use a colon, not a semi-colon after the http, i.e.
http://192.168.0.1
If that doesn't work, it must mean that the address is wrong - to find out the right one, post the model and make of the router here, and maybe someone will know it's default address (a google search might be able to help as well). You will also probably need a password (default user name is usually “admin”).
Once you're on the page, it will just look like a website page. For wireless options, there is usually simply a link - for example, on my router (a netgear) there is a link on the left called "wireless settings" which gives me all the options.
An ethernet router is like a connector - it allows you to either plug in multiple computers (using wires - ethernet cables) to create a network, or share an internet connection.
Hope this helps. If you post the names / makes of your stuff, someone might be able to help more, or there might be a good website we can point you out which explains this all - you're not the first person to have these problems and you won't be the last!!0 -
http://192.168.1.1
is usually a good try

I'd also suggest doing all the setup whilst 'wired' onto the router, have you connected the laptop to the router with an ethernetcable? in 'cmd' ipconfig should then give an idea of waht IP the router is0

i dont use anything to connect to the computer - when telewest came to set it up using the netgear originally it wouldnt do it but then he did it without using anything - i think he said lan or something - didnt really listen - is there a way to find out?
the way i am trying to do it is just switching the laptop on and seeing if it will find the computer - thick eh? then, i found the netgear the engineer had left behind before and am trying to use that - it says one part in laptop and the other in the set top box....but, that too says i need a key
i tried to get the mac address of the netgear and got two - one was - ethernet1realteck and the other was ethernet 2 broadcam - can i post the numbers or it this my security? i also have found a driver number for the ethernet....is this the one? that is ten numbers...
totally dont know what i am doing0
