Sky or Tiscali

I currently have broadband with Orange and pay 17.99 a month. I am thinking of changing to an all in deal so phone, broadband and tv. Have looked at tiscali and sky. Does anyone have any experiences of either of these? Which is the best to go for? I only want basic broadband, basic phone package and standard tv channels.

Thanks in advance.

I have had broadband and phone with Tiscali for a long time and have had no problems with either, both were very well handled by Tiscali and our housemove last year was also handled reasonably tidily by Tiscali.

But Tiscali TV is dire. The picture is frequently pixelated and blamed upon the heavy use of broadband within the area on an evening... the time when we're most likely to watch tv.

I had Setanta through Tiscali tv for two months until I got so fed up of the picture being, somehow, even worse. Watching 4OnDemand also suffers the same lack of performance.

In November, our 12 month contract for tv expires and we'll dump Tiscalitv as soon as we can, to replace it with Freesat HD.

With SKY you get great tv quality, good phone packages and good broadband speeds, but you pay through the nose.

Unfortunately we live far enough out of town to not be on Virgin cable but I'd be tempted to consider that too.

Thanks a lot for your quick response. Definitely worth thinking about as like you say most TV watching is done in the evening and i'd get fed up of a rubbish picture very quickly!!

I have SKy and have TV, BB and Skytalk (free telephone calls evenings and weekends.)
The basic package will cost £17 a month and £10 rental for your phone line.
(BT's rental is about £11.50) I have had Sky for years now and have never had any problem.
I have a Sky+ box which is brilliant, live pause, series link, easier to record programmes, worth the extra money for the + box, even better if you can get someone to refer you, i thinks theres a £50 each reward on offer at the moment.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

    I have Sky mid broadband and for £5 a month I get a reliable 8Mbps (40Gb cap ) service.
You may not be aware that Sky could be buying Tiscali's UK operation.

I have used both Tiscali and sky in the past, sky is undoubtedly the better for TV, but if you only want standard channels, why not have freeview and save yourself £15 a month?

Tiscali is the cheaper option if you dont need the TV along with it. Both providors give you a free wireless router, however tiscali has a little less down time, and were fantastic with their customer services.

Sky started to charge me again 3 months after i cancelled with them and it took 2 months!! before i had to file an indemnity claim with my bank to get the money back.

I live in an area, where reception is poor, we had sky to get a good picture. We have no Digital signal, untill 2011. Currently have Broad band with BT contract about to expire, thinking of moving the whole lot to Sky. Was considering Tiscali for TV, but after reading this post does not seem to be a good idea. But Tiscsli does seem to be better for downtime on Broadband.

So to Conclude are we saying if you want basic tv, and freeview is not available.

To Have the Tv Through Sky, and the Telephone and Broadband through Tiscali.

    Cheers SBM

As pointed out then there is a strong likelihood of Sky buying Tiscali in the near future - so might not matter much which one you go with...
The propensity failure rate for Tiscali is lower than Sky (number of faults compared to the estate) but personally I like my Sky TV - so Sky for TV and Tiscali for BB and phone here :)

I am currently with bt for BB...and no one for calls at the moment...just got bt to change my number cos sick of marketing and sales calls and my number is showing up as not a number at all...wayhay...trust bt to mess that one up...anyway I have sky hd for the tv...and was thinking of going with them for the lot...but...I don't get free BB...so I'd have to pay £17 for the BB and £15 for the line rental + calls...total of £32 ..which is cheaper than bt currently paying £37.22 for BB and line rental...so I noticed Tiscali was £19.95 for they top paskage + calls + free line rental...only I can't get it free so would have to pay an extra £8.24 which would make my package with them £8.99 cheaper than bt...it is something I am looking at just to get abit of money back.
so I am currently paying £68 for my sky+ hd package...
and £37.22 for my line rental and BB...
    total
    £105.22
my last primus bill was £3.04 so if you add that as well then its
    £108.26
anyway as I have got rid of primus in favour of sky which I cannot have yet until bt sort out the number...
if I go with Tiscali for all calls and BB it'll be £28.19 amonth + £68 for sky+ hd total is £96.19
    a saving of £12.07 amonth
    which is £144.84 ayear...
    sounds good to me...
    :D
and if sky are taking the company over then even better but I will have tiscali prices instead of skys...
my friend is with tiscali and has been quite happy with them for years but she only has the BB she is with bt for the calls and line rental...and has freeview for her tv...
also I have another friend who is with talktalk and needs to cut back abit and one of those things he is looking at cutting back with is his BB + calls + line rental...so he is very interested as he has never had the free BB either...
he is currently paying £34.50 for his package with talktalk...

    Plans for 2009

ice you are paying alot! If you can get virgin cable in your area, you could save £50 a month and get far better broadband.

#4ut if you cant get free sky broadband, i'm guessing you are rurual and wont be able to get it.

IMO going with tiscali AND sky, although slightly better is a waste of money.
Sky gives you low cost broadband only if you have TV with them, which works out at £7 - £9 less than having tiscali broadband and sky TV. The service levels are not so much better as to justify the extra amount.
