Yes exactly. I was asking a civil question as to the validity of the comments of Sara as to the Picasso being a viable 2K alternative and you for telling us about how reliable your brand new picasso was?

We can't all afford new cars you know.

Well done to the OP for taking the plunge. Sounds like you've got a bargain!

Come on you lot get over it!!!
Tis the season to be JOLLY tra la la la la la la la la !!!
I've still not had chance to get outside and check it over properly, as I have ill( obviousluy not that ill) off school all day, squabling children to cotend with.Feeling quite positive about it now though, as my partner got a good fully comp insurance deal sorted.Only down side is I'm still a learner, and apparantly it's is very difficult / expensive to insure learners in imported cars,so I'm going to have to get driving practice in a friends car instead,I'm desperate to have a go!!
Tax it tommorrow and were all set to drive.

  • Having brought several cars on Ebay and sold a couple I offer this advice.

If you live close enough look at the car before bidding, if OP was only 25 miles away I would have had a look. But having said that the last car I brought was only 10 miles away and I didn't look! But I was lucky.

I always ask questions and get a feel for the seller - any worries then look for another one, there are plenty on Ebay. Don't rush into the first one you find. Do your research
follow the type of car you want for a few weeks and you will get an idea of the money they are fetching.

I belive that, on Ebay as any auction, if you bid on the item you are entering into a commitment to buy. As they say don't bid if you don't want to buy!

Anyway I really hope the OP has got the car they want and it's a good one.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all.

    Steve
  • Have sold two 'restoration projects' on eBay, and the buyers were very happy. Recently, bought a 2003 Volkswagen Passat of a guy who had little or no feedback (I have over 500+ 100% trading record) Met him in a car park in Oxford (half way between him and us!) The car is great, a little higher than average mileage, but we spent £5K less than the same cars are on the forecourts down here in the south ! and the car looks set to sail through its first MOT !
Turns out the guy 'Knew somebody' in the trade, had bought the car, and was doing a little moonlighting from his ordinary job.
We got a bargain, and anyone can do the same, and if you don't like the car, or its mis-described, you can always walk away !!
  • We bought a car off ebay this year. We paid to have it checked out to make sure it wasn't stolen or clocked. It's a fab car and a bargain so we're happy.
  • Peakma,

Imports are usually a little more to insure than the UK equivelent model BUT there are some insurance companies that do not differentiate. Often Car Clubs have special deals with insurance companies. I am a member of a Honda Owners Club and they have deals with several companies that give discount and I believe one of them (Sky Insurance) does not charge more for imports.

As for parts etc - remember that Japanese cars top the reliability surveys every year. Some of the parts 'may' be more expensive than the european equivelent, but they go wrong far less often.

Also it used to be the case that if you had the JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) model rather than the one officially brought into the UK and sold through the UK dealership network, that the dealers would refuse to provide support - but those days are history now and I do not know anyone with an import of any make that struggles to get parts.

With many imports, the parts are the same as the UK equivelent anyway. Where they are not, the stock may be in Japan rather than Belguim and so take a day or two longer to arrive at the dealership - but often the delivery time is identical.

The only downside is that some people are still wary buying an import and so come resale time you can find it difficult to sell and you won't get as good a price as you would if it was a UK model, but then you know that as you yourself got the car cheap partly due to it being an import.

The only other point to bear in mind - if it hasn't been in the country long - change the tyres as the tyres used in Japan are not good on UK roads with our weather and road conditions. Also check if it has any weather proofing, many imports don't get undersealed and it should be done as soon as possible before it picks up crude and grime from our roads otherwise you just seal it in there.

    Good luck with it.
