Just like on-line banking, if people don't take reasonable steps to protect their accounts or use sloppy passwords, then they are open to attack.

That maybe so but as far as I can see, the problem seems to be mainly with the people in charge of PayPal, as opposed to the users. I already pay enough in eBay fees to list the items. I really do not want to pay more money to subscribe to what is seemingly an inherently faulty system.

It does seem strange that I hardly get any problems with those who pay by cheque and yet you lot do. So I guess I'm worried that I might be jinxed when it comes to PayPal... :-/

Ive never had a problem with cheques in fact the only problems i have had on Ebay have been with Paypal.I paid a seller for an item and it never turned up went to Paypal for help and the seller removed funds from his account i got nothing from Paypal.Another time i was paid by a Paypal Echeque it took 15 days to clear in my account ! As others have said the best way to pay and recieve money is bank transfer its instant and costs nothing and its safe its just not as convenient as Paypal.
Of course Ebay dont want you to use this method they want you to use Paypal because they own Paypal >:(
  • Thing is whilst paypal is convenient it costs the seller and that cost has to found from somewhere....usually absorbed in the sale but more often than not in the postage...which is what i partly do...then you get some pencils who think that you are happy to make a loss because the postage stamp is 1.00 and youve charge 1.80....some people on ebay are thick! ::)

  • one thing to watch though....verification...due to state of the ebay and paypal sites...ie very un-customer-focused....you must be verified for selling....unfortunately they required my verfication numbers from amounts placed on my credit card from july 2002!!

they wouldnt resend it, so i had 200 locked in my paypal acoount......only when i threatened legal action and report them to trading standards did they sort it pronto.....t*****s!

got into my account and withdrew the lot!

i will be seeking compo from them as well as from amazon for a similar but worse prob....

    american rubbish!

  • Hi,

I have just sold an ipod on ebay and the buyer (who has about 15 +ve feedback over 2 months) paid straight away using paypal.

So after reading what people have said on this website i have immediatly "withdrawn" the funs from paypal to my bank account however paypal say this can take anything up to 5 working days!!

So is it now safe to send the ipod (sending via speical delivery so will have proof of postage). I mean is the money now guaranteed to be tranferred into my banck account??

    Thanks for all advice
  • Once the money leaves your paypal account to be transfered to you banks account - it acts like a cheque being payed in, it can take upto 4 - 5 days to be cleared funds. And the money during this time can be reclaimed at any point and I think even after its cleared paypal can claim the money back....! Nothing is gauranteed with paypal.

I want to know what the likelihood is of fraud because I believe qchex is the cheapest way to accept payments for a seller.
No reliance should be placed on the above.
