The problem is that some jobs just don't pay well. My last job wasn't well paid but I enjoyed everyday, so making extra was perfect. My current job is better paid but I've got the bug now :D
  • Three years ago I had had a well paid job for ten years. I hated the job, and a lot of the people I worked with, although there were some I would have died for.

Then I had a heart attack, work related and was TOLD to give up work. So I did and spent a year living off my saving and doing whatever I wanted.

Then I decided it was time to go back to work, and found taking a year off after a heart attack was a bad move. From an employers point of view "Left last job because of a heart attack" plus "hasn't worked for a year" equals "Bin this applicant".

But after 1.5 years of trying to get a job I was given a 2 month contract to complete a specific project for a VERY local company. Walking distance from my house.

When the contract was up they asked me to stay on another month, then another. Ben there six months now and I have loved every second of it. Love the work, love the people I work with and love the company I work for.

I can't save £300-£400 per month like I use to, but for the last six months I have had £30 - £50 left in my bank on the day before pay day. And each month I have paid an extra week or two in rent and spent £100 - £150 on "extras". Such as a Remoska, a second freezer, pressure cooker, wok, heater, vacuum sealer etc.

I'm also 2 months ahead with my rent so don't have to pay anything in December or January next year.

Maybe it was because I'm now 49, or that I had a heart attack, or that I spent 2.5 years thinking I would never work again, But somewhere along the line I learned that there is more to life than work and money.

Then again, I think it may have a lot to do with the people in here who taught me that there is always someone worse off than you and quality of life is far more important than any stuff you will own.

And most of all, you will get a bigger kick out of saving a penny than you ever will earning one.

I left a 'better-paid' job to take up my dream job that I've been doing now for three months. I have some qualifications and some people have said Im wasted doing what I'm doing - but so what? it was the first step in me getting back on my feet and Im hoping to go back and finish my nursing training, with the ultimate aim one day I would like to be a ward manager.

I could get a better paid job, yes, but my employer has shown faith in me, and how can you put a price on that? Im my last job i was so unhappy I was forever calling in sick - I havent had a single day off sick in three months. In an industry which is built on having a good health record, they gave me a chance despite the fact my sickness record was so shocking.
I've dragged myself in on the verge of collapse because I didnt want my employers to lose faith in me.

Money isnt everything to me - Im reasonably well paid but my job is mentally, and physically, exhausting. But you know what? I wouldnt swap it for the world. i do surveys etc because i enjoy them - the rewards are helpful but I dont depend on them. Its not always as easy as just geting a better paid job... especially in this current climate.....
