Why don't you earn enough?

Sorry OP but I think that yours is quite a condescending post. I don't work. I'm disabled and cannot work (I do not claim any incapacity benefit just for the record), so I stay at home and look after my children. I would love to go and get a job but I have several problems associated with my disability that make it impossible to work. So I do what I can to earn vouchers and sometimes money by various means. Generally it is done when my kids are asleep or at school so does not interfere with them.
But I really think you should have thought before posting. I found it quite patronising and assumptive.LBM - August 2008 - Debts then - £33390 - 2nd LBM - November 2009 - Debts then - £18500:mad:

As someone that is self employed with 3 jobs, I would find it very hard to go back into being employed.
I am in the position where I can actually do two of the jobs at the same time, I can make my jewellery inbetween dealing with customers, and no one can see that I am doing it, would I be able to do that at a call centre? Ermm I don't think so.
I can also be on hand to deal with the kids, have a day off if I feel like it and i don't have to face a return to work interview if I get ill.
Sure I would love to earn more money, who doesn't? But this is my choice, it works for me, and I love the fact that some days I don't even have to get dressed for work!

I earn enough for the job I do, I work in sales admin in rural dorset and bring home just under £1k a month. I'm trying hard to bring home a little more cash though online means now as my OH has recently been laid off and we dont know when he will find work againThey have the internet on computers now?! - Homer Simpson

I'm a librarian and work in the public sector because I like helping people. I work with special needs people and people with literacy issues. I could earn more in the private sector, but it would be in a law or business setting and my heart would not be in it. A colleague worked in the private sector for a while and said she just felt hollow helping rich people get richer.
I have seen so many forums where people have said "why don't people just get better paid jobs" and they forget that for all the people in the various caring/helping jobs that would mean giving up their career. I basically try and make money in other ways so that I can keep doing the job I love.0 -
The obvious way of getting more money is to get a better job! Even if you already earn a good wage there's always another rung on the ladder. I'm wondering what is stopping you from getting a better job?
It's rather naïve to think things are as simple as getting a better paid job! There is a whole host of factors that you clearly haven't considered, among them location, family commitments, long term illness/disability, qualifications etc not to mention the current economic climate – I doubt there will be too many bosses out there handing out substantial payrises!
Two years ago I had pretty much reached the ceiling for what the industry pays for my role in my area, and without considerable upskilling, that's as good as it gets for me – there is no other rung on the ladder.
If people on here have found other ways to bring in a few extra pounds, often from the comfort of their own homes at a time that suits them, and are happy, then who are you to suggest that they go out and find themselves a better paid job?! I agree with Bonsibabe – your post was pretty patronising! If I don't respond to your posts, it's probably because you're on my 'Ignore' list.0 -

Actually I don't think that. I did mention in my original post that lack of qualifications as a reason that I don't have a well paid job, so I'm a bit confused by your claim that I haven't considered things.
Also, I'm not suggesting that anyone should be getting a job if they think they earn enough. I understand some people can't earn more because of things they can't change.0 -
I found this post interesting!!
I have a degree, a whole host of "extra" qualifications, including several nvq's, management courses and mandatory training for the post I am in. I am in a managerial position and yet I still do mystery shopping........
I earn an adequate amount for the job I do, but I work for a third sector company or a charity as most of you will know it. I love the job I do with a passion, I love the buzz I get from helping those who truly need it and taking on the big boys and making them appreciate that everyone matters no matter what their circumstances, but my job is not as well paid as a large blue chip company pays. Dont get me wrong, I have worked for big blue chip companies, and earnt good money, and I could earn considerably more than I do now if I went back to work for them, but actually I really like what I do.
So for me its not a case of getting a "better" job, I have that, its not a case of getting "more qualifications", I have those too, its a case of getting job satisfaction and that in most industries is hard to find.
So I mystery shop to add a few extras here and there, I make on average £150 - £200 a month before tax and that helps to pay for Christmas and Birthdays. We have a good standard of living and it helps ease the wheels along the way - so to quote someone else on this thread, why look a gift horse in the mouth?Free/impartial debt advice: Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) | National Debtline | Find your local CAB0 -
Kimitatsu - great post!
I think for a lot of us it's about treading that line between doing a job we get some enjoyment from and doing a job that pays us enough to live on.
My cousin is 25 and earns a 6 figure salary, but I don't envy him one bit and I think I could do what he does if I had taken a different path. He is in the office from 7am to 10pm and he says his job has no soul. He has absolutely no life outside work because he is either at work or is exhausted.
I do also think that it is harder to get promotions now because so many sectors/industries now have flatter management structures. In the past there would be lots of rungs, but now there are often only a few tiers. That is even true in libraries. In the authority I work for there used to be assistant librarians, librarians, senior librarians and then various rungs of the management ladder. Now, there are librarians and the management team. The management team consists of three people who are intending to stay until retirement so there will be no promotions unless one of us kills them off!0 -
Its quite un-usual im sure but i actually earn the same or more than my manager !
In these troubled times its sometimes better to remain one of the workers as when the cuts come, they usual come in admin and management, trim the fat first you see.0 -
Because Life is just not like that !!!! :rotfl:
I have lots of Qualifications including GNVQ, BTEC and a Degree but the area I live in has very few jobs available that pay over minimum wage or doing the job I want to do. So if I wanted a higher paid job I would have to move out of the area I grew up in - which i'm not prepared to do.
Also... its not always about Money. I would much prefer to do I job I enjoy than a well paid job I hate. I've been Self Employed for a year now and even though I'm earning slightly less than my previous Job I wouldnt swap it for the world. Just the thought of waking up in the morning and not having to face my old boss puts a great big smile on my face. and not having to dress to impress every morning has its advantages too, I can quite happily go to work in my Pyjamas, no make up and un-brushed hair... Bliss
I do Surveys and Cash back sites because I enjoy it and it feels like i'm getting something for nothing - Surely Everyone loves a Freebie (Right?). I use the vouchers to buy treats that I might not normally be able to afford.
I really disagree with your point that the people on here are doing this sort of thing because they cant or wont get a better Job.2009 Savings & Winnings so far....Pigsback £15.06 +[strike]£40[/strike] M&S Vouchers + £20 New Look + TNS £15 Capital Bonds + Qype Ninja Goodies + £50 Virgin VoucherSealed Pot Challenge #589 - Target £1500
