i think it's taking a very black-and-white view to say 'get a better job'... the world is shades of gray!
as others have said, many people are in a position where they may not be working (i.e. SAHMs) or for some they are in a job where progression isnt an option; i.e. temp christmas staff - students and the like [me!]
Mind you, I'm skint as hell now - and i walked away from a job where my earning potential was pretty amazing to do this. it was a huge sacrifice and due to the fact that i really do have almost no money, as a certain chain says, every little helps! On the up

I am a childminder and before that an Nursery nurse. My wage is dreadful in fact all jobs to do with childcare pay badly. I think because you enjoy being and working with children you have to pay for it by earning less. You cant get anything for nothing!0

It occurs to me that the biggest problem that posters seem to have is a lack of "Positive Self Image"; if you don't believe in yourself, then nor will anyone else. "
No I think one of the biggest problems some posters have is honest to god cr*ppy life situations.
I have a preschooler - that cuts out an enourmous range of jobs as my partner already works 70 hr weeks and therefore I coudlnt' get childcare to cover the hours needed for BOTH of us to wor f/t (unless I got a nanny but at £25k that'd eat up my earnings straight away)
I have a chronic neurological illness, there is no cure, the medication can control the symptoms but only at the cost of side effects like schizophrenia, nausea, weight gain, depression etc etc - and thats not exactly something that can be overcome by better self belief!
And I agree that the orginal post wasn't particularly well worded - get a better job?!?!? I wonder if the OP has even looked at the news recently? redundancies everywhere fgs! Even if you WANT/CAN climb the ladder (and get those long hours) there isn't the same number of high level jobs as there are clenaing jobs!DEBT: £500 credit card £800 Bank overdraft

halia, thanks for your post. It has made me think that I should have said "the biggest problem "some" posters seem to have...."
I agree with you, self belief can't cure all, but I believe it can help those who are not aware of some of the techniques that can be learned and applied.
I am also aware that, however well intentioned my posts may be, I may inadvertently upset someone. If I have, then I do apologise. I wish you and your family the very best.0 -
I do have a good education and many qualifications, but I chose to live with my husband and soulmate abroad, and here I am not allowed to work, at least not for the first 2 years. So I'm looking for an alternative to earn some money online, since I am computer literate and have broadband and time on my side.0

Well I have 7 kids - so when my youngest was born 2 years ago I decided to change companies - taking a salary cut so I didnt need to travel to London every week, 5mins from my house so can go home at lunch and also be home for just after 5pm - having these things are priceless! If I really wanted I could go climb up the ladder but my family life would suffer - this is just not worth it.
I have now taken on a 2nd job which is part-time - I can do this when it suits me and hopefully next year once I have built up my contacts I will pack in my full-time job and do this more and will have a healthy balance - working when I want and earning good enough money.I get paid to party!:rotfl:0 -
I have a good job - I am working full time and still going to college at the weekends to become fully qualified Chartered Accountant and one day earn loads and loads of money. I just changed to a job that gave me 40% payrise and FULL study support (until then I was paying for my studies myself) - so theoreticaly someone can say I don't need to earn money on surveys etc etc..
But do you EVER have enough money? 3 years ago I was happy when I had enough money to buy myself a shirt in M&S in full price. Nowadays I am saving to get a better car.
But I still do the surveys and reviews and all that - because I love nothing more the freebies and I enjoy doing it. And there is nothing better then to have some money on the side "just in case". I have so much on my Boots card that I can do full bathroom shop for free. I have so much on my Nectar & Tesco card that I can do full month of grocery shopping for free.
Which also means - if I fall ill and my SSP just about covers the main bills, I won't have to eat beans on toast all month - or my husband or children would they come one day.
So the idea "stop doing those surveys etc and get a proper job" not only doesn't really work in real life, but WHY WOULD YOU?0 -
I'm in my 40's and do bank care work and earn very little but am lucky to have savings. My father passed away this year and was a saver, he just saved and saved and did not spend it. He passed away at home and all the money he had never made him happy.
I have a huge dog and I mean huge, over 13 stone and I run my life around him and not work now oh and my young lady lol. I intend to enjoy life before I meet my maker and working on nursing ward reminds me to enjoy each and every day because you don't know whats round the corner.0 -
An interesting discussion thread!
Certainly for me, I've reduced my woirking hours (and consequently my pay!) so that I can spend more time with my young family. Doing a little bit extra on the internet when the kids are in bed and my husband's at work is an efficient use of my time. It's much more productive than sitting there watching mindless tv!
Even the pennies doing surveys, daily clicks and writing reviews on DooYoo etc build up to a sizeable sum over the course of the year and help to pay for a few treats in life!
Personally, I'm quite well-qualifiedbut it's my own choice to put my family before my career and my pay-packet!

Pound,
I don't think your post was condescending.and I think I know where you were coming from. You are right that the best way to make more money is to get paid more and I have moved around in order to secure the best deal for me. And I accept the long hours and the sacrifice that I need to make.
I have no money worries but I like this site because it encourages me to stay that way and not be tempted to live beyond my means0
