It stands to reason Also because women seem to outlive men, many care homes are overpopulated by women so the men can sometimes feel there is little creative activity directed towards them.
Exactly this is the case in the care home where I was offered the post there are 21 residents and only 2 are male, I would make their needs top of my list as I think that most of the people that work there are female also, as I am.
I have to say I don't think thats the case at the retirement complex where I am due to interview, I think it's a good mix of both sexes and look to offer something for everyone.Remember every waking moment is a chance to turn it all around.;) Knowledge is the key to respect.

I am getting very confused...half the posts are talking about Care Homes and the other Retirement homes but I think Witsend is going for an interview in a Sheltered Accommodation complex which is something entirely different. My mother was first in sheltered accommodation and then into a nursing home. Sheltered accommodation usually means the residents are more nimble of limb and more often than not bored...hence they love any distraction. Fish and chip suppers was always a highlight. As was Bingo believe it or not. Mostly I found that Mum loved the chance to sit in the lounge and be among others and have a good chat.
In her nursing home the activities co-ordinator needs a medal for the effort she puts in for very little response. As you say, a lot are chair or bed bound, deaf, blind, senile and so forth. From my viewpoint, musical concerts, choirs, children's choirs, chance for a sing-a-long is always high on Mum's wish list and always well attended. In particular she loves the school children that appear at Christmas to sing Carols. You may or may not know, Witsend that Schools are very keen to educate children to appreciate the elderly, and organise Harvest Festival, Easter, Christmas trips to visit Homes and bring hand made gifts for the inmates. My mothers Home also has dog visiting days. If I think of more stuff I will let you know. Good Luck.member # 12 of Skaters Club

Hi everyone I'm sorry that it has been a while
I sadly lost a close friend of mine and the week has been a difficult one.
Today has been a day of very mixed feelings I attended the 'trial by lunch' and my friends funeral so please understand if I keep this short.
Errata you were so rightthe dancing shoes brought back memories for the two gentlemen I was fortunate to meet, the paper doll was a real hit and the two groups (there were eight in total)I spent time with were laughing and I felt that I had made an impression. The interview was 12.30 to 3.30 although after the presentation and time to chat with the other candidates there was little oppertunity to talk to everyone. I left at 1.40 to attend the funeral.
I await a call tomorrow from the manager so I will let you know. In the meantime thank you for all your support and ideas:ARemember every waking moment is a chance to turn it all around.;) Knowledge is the key to respect.

Sorry for your loss Witsend what a bummer, having to be witty and light for your interview when you feel so down. I am sure they will take that into account. Good luck and keep in touch.member # 12 of Skaters Club
