The don't get the numbers from anywhere, they are randomly dialed, some hit a valid number, others don't.0

I'm feeling like an absolute b*****d now :-)
My mobile is registered with the Telephone Preference Service. Oftel takes a dim view on people sending unsolicited commercial text messages:
http://www.ofcom.org.uk/static/archive/Oftel/consumer/advice/faqs/prvfaq8.htm
"Although it has not been clear in the past whether SMS text messages are actually 'telephone calls' in the sense that has been traditionally understood, the IC takes the view that SMS text messages should be regarded as telephone calls for the purposes of the Regulations - although they are not explicitly covered by the Telecommunications Data Protection Directive 97/66/EC. Individual subscribers who do not wish to receive unsolicited SMS text messages for direct marketing purposes can therefore register with the TPS."
Oh, and its also illegal according the TPS themselves. I've certainly never given them my phone number and I'm picky about where I give it out:
http://complaints.tpsonline.org.uk/Consumer/
"New legislation which came into force on 11 December 2003 makes it unlawful to send an unsolicited direct marketing SMS to an individual subscriber unless the recipient has previously given their consent to such communications."
Reckon I have enough proof to give Vodafone that the account holder is engaging in illegal activities?

"4.2. Your Mobile Device and/or the Services must not be used for any purpose we believe is abusive, objectionable, illegal, fraudulent, a nuisance or for criminal activities.
I'd say its objectionable, probably illegal and considering it attempts to look like a normal person unless you read the entire message (which is past several blank lines after the message) quite possibly fraudulent.
I got a text like that today to my mobile, It was from a vodaphone number asking me to 'Call Abi' the gave a fixed line number. I had just put my mobile number on Gumtree to find our lost cat - so I had to call it- in case it was about her. I heard the first few seconds of a messge saying it was a sexually explicit line. I immediattely hungup - as I had heard that some of these cost £40!.
The messsage was sent from a Vodaphone, asking me to call a fixed line 0208 number.
I am publising the numbers of this scumbag, but what I'd really like to do is report it to Vodaphone but cant see how to on the website. Any ideas? and I wonder what BTs policies are about their lines used on this way. anyone know? Incidentally the mobile that sent text was: 07786 409 573, and it asked me to call 02081142920.:mad:0 -
I got a text last night which said " Please call me on ....... Karen x x x " Had my OH read this I would have not had my fingers to type this message. With one of the 0208 numbers listed above. I think this is a pretty awful scam as at least if there is a hint of a discalimer its only the stupid or people who don't read it properly that fall in. I actually use to know someone called Karen who occasionally visited London so I could well of rang the number.0
;24495849]So what credit card no is this?
It isn't a real credit card number, it is for testing payment sections of websites while you are coding them, the idea is that if the site is set up correctly then the number will be accepted, however it won't pass the bank verification stage.0 -
Hi everyone, just a reminder: if you want to post the numbers you get these things from, don't forget to put them with and without spaces so that the search engines can pick them up regardless of how they're entered, for example:
02081142920
0208 114 2920
020 8114 2920 (for London numbers)0 -

You could try: P15 0FF instead.... One '5' short, but the meaning should still be clear enough.0

This is the most ridiculous scam I've ever heard of! :rotfl:
I'd love to know how many people fell for this and actually paid the "bill" they were issued."Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?" (Douglas Adams)0 -

I don't think its that ridiculous. The threat of doing something is usually a lot worse than actually doing it. Also would any married man on this forum want a baliff turning up and telling his wife they want payment for an adult phone line? This is the perfect scam as most people would pay up to avoid any embrassement.0 -
