Back to first cars as I was behind the loop.
My first car was an MG Midget. 1968, wire wheels, leather seats.
It had a bit of a dodgy petrol pump though, which would randomly stop working, so I'd have to leap out (mid-traffic in town) and whack under the car about level with the rear wheels with the special two-ended (leather/copper) wheel hammer to get it going again. After the first or second whack I could usually hear it ticking again.
Damned thing used to freeze on the inside in the winter, then when you got going along the road, every bend would cause all the condensation on the inside to roll across the roof and onto your head.
The heater ... oh, the heater. It pulled out and on came the fan. No heat. Just the fan.... I had that car over a year before I found out that TWISTING it after you'd pulled it out made it go warm!!
No stereos back then. I had to take a portable radio/tape player with me and put in on the passenger seat. Got through loads of batteries (no rechargers back then).
Kissed some boys in that car... and ...

I had that a couple of years, then my sister got it and I got an M reg red Astra, which i liked. My first car was a VW Beetle in 86 when I was 17, had it about 9 months, great car, never let me down, after that from just before I was 18 I've been lucky enough to have company cars.0

My first car was a Renault 4 - you almost had to pedal it. The cranky gear stick that came out of the dashboard - many a person must have reversed instead of putting the car into first

Oh I had a choke in my Fiesta. I bought when Minis were all the rage for a gals first car but couldn't find one a mini I could afford so settled for a Fiesta for £600. Sold it a couple of years later at a profit as everyone seemed to be buying Fiestas as first cars. That was the last profit I ever made on a vehicle!
I did come close to making another with a 'collectable' type vehicle I own at the moment but then the fuel price rocketted and she only does 25 mpg (diesel) so her price has dropped a bit and I can't see it improving.0 -
Been away a while....see we're on first cars now. Mine was an Austin A40, which I purchased for £60 when crashing my Honda and walking with a stick ceased to be a novelty. It saw me through my last student year and, at the end, I began selling parts from it. Throughout the year, this miracle of British engineering belched blue smoke, so others smirked behind their hands and predicted its early demise, but apart from that thirst for oil, it cost me only the fuel to run.
The first thing I dispensed with was the starter motor, which is why the traffic cop who'd stopped me for having a dodgy silencer ended up cranking the thing to get me on the road again. You can just imagine them doing that nowadays, can't you?
By July, as it was clearly dying , I took the car to my parent's house and swapped-out the gearbox for someone who'd stripped first on theirs. I then removed anything else saleable and drove it, at about 5am, (the silencer had become really bad) to the nearest scrapyard, where I left it at the gate. A notice pinned to it said, 'Thanks for having this.'0
