Sounds to me like the usual male approach to the groceries; it seems we then always get sent away and not "trusted" to do it again... :D
  • i am just lucky my husband wasnt there also...coz he is a nightmare always wants more than my sons and adds about £20 on each time!! he is banned from shopping ...although happy to be so !

  • What a fab fab fab thread. Very encouraging. It's great to have it reinforced how much lots of smallish savings mount up - especially when you put the money away immediately so you can't spend it.

We've been pretty disciplined over the years with putting extra bits and pieces into an overpayment savings account from which we make overpayments to our mortgage then the t's and c's permit and this has mounted up considerably over the years because with each overpayment we've increased the savings correspondingly. We could do better on frittering away though - so thanks to all on this thread. I feel motivated again - I hope that doesn't depress my wife too much. As she quite rightly points out when I get carried away, it not all about 'jam tomorrow'.

I'd definitely look for a small local company for the double glazing as well. We had ours done a couple of years back and I couldn't stand the sales pitch from the big companies so we got a small local firm in. Good quality, good price, good after sales, no sales pitch - brilliant.

Oh - and I'm usually banned from the shopping. I'm sometimes allowed to do it if I promise faithfully to stick religiously to the list, but the flesh being weak (despite a spirit in bang on the right place) the promise doesn't usually get quite as far as the check out. So I get banned again.

    Mr Micawber
Yes, small incremental amounts can really impact especially early on due to their cumulative effect.Whilst not easy to see early on, they do make a difference. People use different ways to look at this but one worth considering is the cumulative interest that £10 would incur if it was the last £10 to be paid off at the end of the mortgage term; gives a good idea of the gearing being obtained

I too have been banned from groceries but in truth OH shops on one of the days she doesn't work....

However, wife and daughter have noted my obsession with the spreadsheet for the household budgeting, but, here I know I'm not alone in this and can safely discuss the nuances and outputs derived.... :D
  • hi mr micawber....thanks for your feedback!! you are right smaller savings can add uo and make quite a big difference to the interest on your mortgage. this is the way i like to think!!!!

good luck on your quest...i am glad you have felt motivated reading this!
