  • Hi stuart...thanks for the advice , all very welcome :j

The shopping tip is a great idea.....to be honest i have pretty much always gone for the supermarket own brand on most things ... but stepping down is a great idea, and really quite often you can't tell the difference anyhow! considering i shop for a family of four - husband and boys eat an awaful lot also - i dont think i do too bad...as the most it comes to is £60 ...a lot of my friends spend about 80-100!! quite often also in the shopping there are extra bits also such as household things...so i think my budget is ok...yesterday i only spent 54.00..so i got the extra 5.00 as cashback and added to the cow jug to go towards overpayments.

oh ..another thing...i have just checked the national savings bond winners for november...i won !!!:T £50.00...so some of that can also go to op's. trouble is i am also now starting to save for double glazing...as we have put it off for years...and we suffer bad from condensation...the wood is not looking good..and really don't have long left...sio i will have to look at ways to be able to pay for that and my op's!!!
    total morg o/p's 2007/08 = £795;)
    mortgage o/p's Nov = £90- target :£100 pmonth :j
    double glazing = £300 -target :£3500 ????:rotfl:

Very good on the shopping front. We balance branded and ownbrands and (including about £12 of alcohol, for me :o) our weekly shop is averaging at £72.10 for food and drink, plus £10.05 cleaning & toiletries for three of us.

I would seriously think of backing off on the mortgage to get the few thousand needed for the windows and doors asap. This adds value to the house, improves security and will reduce running costs. Now that the recession is starting to bite, you should be able to get good deals from vendors who need the sales and normally getting it all done at once gives the biggest discount. Do get the doors at the same time as windows so again you maximise discount.

Certainly improved our house a lot, although we borrowed about £3k against the mortgage in 2000 when we had them done. Seems a small amount now but then it was significant for us.
  • i think you are right stuart about concentrating more on the double glazing fund....i do keep asking myself the same question...trouble is i actually really love making op's on the mortgage...just because you know how much interest is going to be charged and it is so much also...so it just feels better being able to pay a bit extra...does that make sense?????

i think it would be wise for me to concentrate on double glazing as it has needed doing for years...and it is about time!!! i don't think i want to stop the op's though...maybe just stick to £20 per week just to cure my addiction and make a bit of difference!!

We had double glazed sashes made for the front of our house a few years back. At the back we have regular DG. Both worth every penny IMHO. Before that we had orginal Victorial sashes - very beautiful- but I honestly did feel in the winter that we were just heating the street:eek::eek:

    Good Luck

These days it wouldn't be an issue to save rather than get a loan, our position was different then. However, burglary a while later only took place after they failed to access by one of the new doors and broke out the "fixed" panel on double pinned aluminium patio doors.... hence my comment on sooner for security. (Just got an e-Cops e-mail noting increased burglaries in our area...)
