I'm surprised to read that, regarding the LUS, the majority of what you say on this thread seems to centre around you're own ideals, or supposition.
Apart from the link to the bt basic website I haven't seen any other information to back up what you say.0 -

I'm not allowed to have an opinion now?
I was actually basing it on what a BT employee stated on the telephones board. He merely stated that BT Basic is due to launch later this year & given it contains similar clauses than LUS & my knowledge of the company i said it would be removed to be replaced by BT Basic.0 -
Actually, LUS comes about because of BT's obligations to provide social telephony services under its Universal Service Obligation....as such the driver is to provide services to those on low income rather than low users. With LUS, BT uses/d the latter as a proxy for the former, if that makes any sense.
This isn't really my field, but as I understand it the new BT Basic is intended to directly target low income customers. When Ofcom consulted on USO a couple of years ago, the situation was that the current LUS wouldn't be allowed to be withdrawn until BT had got 600k customers on the new scheme (see this)...don't know if this is still the case. As I understand it, BT Basic won't have the same limitations of not allowing broadband, but will retail the restriction that you can't select an alternate carrier.
Edit : oh, almost forgot. Neither BT nor any other fixed line telephony provider in the UK has had a licence for approx 5 years. They all have a set of General Conditions (obligations) with which they must comply, but there's no longer any licences as such.
Given there's been some catfighting about affiliations in previous posts, I'll state mine...I worked for BT briefly approx 19 years ago, and currently work for one of their competitors, but not in the residential market (hence "this is not really my field").I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0 -
I on the other hand do work for BT Retail and as far as I have been made aware teh BT Basic is replacing the LUS totally (eventually). The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 20

Of course you're allowed to have an opinion..
..as long as it doesn't conflict with mine :rotfl:0 -
"BT Basic will be available around the Summer of 2008" from the BT site at http://www.btbasic.bt.com/
As it's now June, anybody got any definate news or confirmed eligiblity requirements?0 -
the link you've posted is quite old (april 2007), but there does not seem to be any further updated information available regarding BT Basic, anyone know?0

Who told you that, Normanmark? It may be BT policy, but are they enforcing it?
I have been on the Light User Scheme since it first came in many, many years
ago. I have been connected online via ADSL for nearly six years with various
ISPs, and still am.

I used to work for BT Wholesale on Broadband provision & Light user scheme was deemed an incompatible product with broadband about 2 years or so ago now.0
