  • For the amount you are spending i wouldnt buy peugeot or renault. We've had a few of both and various things went wrong. I dont mind the older peugeots though.

For reliability you want Honda and the jap stuff. Or you could get something like a Ford Focus, reliable and the parts are cheap.

My OH has just suggested a Kia people carrier - they have the three seatbelts and the diesel engines are older spec Mercedes engines. Kia's are ten a penny, which means it's getting easier to find the parts now (at one point they were like hen's teeth). They're okay as A to B cars, nothing special.
For the love of god, avoid French. I'm yet to meet anybody who's never had a problematic French car.
Whether a car is going to be a pain or not depends on how it's been treated. It never ceases to amaze me the amount of people who wait for their car to conk out before taking action. Doing the services as and when they're due will keep a car on the road for aeons. Also, if you buy an older model you'll save money straight away. I don't understand why people have to buy the newest car they can afford, older models are easy enough to service yourself. I have an N reg Fiesta at present - it's the newest car I've had!

Thumbs up to your post, it does matter how the car has been treated. Sometimes you can be just outright unlucky with a car and everything will break. Or on some cars they just have problems anyway, even when they're new!

I have to say though that i had a Peugeot 1.0litre 106 (phase 1) as my first car and it was THE most reliable car i have ever owned..and ive owned ALOT of cars.
However, it did crumple like a tin can when i went into the back of another car at 10 mph. :D

You are wrong it was a german car with a peugeot badge surely
  • Bit strange no one has mentioned a citroen picasso, they seem to have an above average reliability, and the amount of taxi drivers using them they must have a lot of good points, they also should be within your budget. Now a |Renault would be the last car I would consider after having an absolute nightmare one before:)
  • what about a berlingo

clarkson liked them so im sure they must be super reliable and not actually french
