Is this a good price for this car?

I'm looking at buying a new car, as we're a bit short atm its gotta be second hand. We have 3 children and are downgrading from a 7 seater to a normal car so i've ben looking at a Renault Scenic cause it has 3 seats in the back with proper seatbelts. My husband thinks its a bad idea as its a french car and seems to think they're not as good as other makes (i don't see the difference either way a cars a car to me). As dh doesn't drive anymore the final decision is mine but i've also heard other horror stories about french cars so don't want to make any mistake as i need this to last a while.

I've seen an 03 plate Renault Scenic at the renault dealers its got fsh done at the dealers has 50k on the clock and has had no work done at all. I think its a 1.6 but not 100% sure. They want 2.1k for it i can certainly pay that but would like to get it cheaper if poss, Is this the going rate? I don't want to pay that much if it going to be expensive to repair if anything does break as could happen soon with nothing going wrong on it so far.

Any advice much appreciated.:D

  • you hear horror stories about every car, go see it, base it on a case by case basis

As a rule, the french do make bad cars. Japan/Germany make good cars. But there are exceptions to all rules! I'd side with your DH, but if you can get a deal it may be worth the 'risk'.

Lol if its up to him we'd be remortgaging and getting an Evo 10 but as hes back to a provisional and has a dd on his license we can't afford insurance for him so he doesn't get the final say. Tbh though he just says its my decision cause i'm the one who drives it, with my limited knowledge i just want 3 seatbelts in the back and something less than 2l. I was also considering a Ford Focus but haven't seen a definate possiblity like the scenic is.

No they dont, lets look at the reliability table again shall we?

French cars are cheaper, and you need to keep that in mind

I have run citroens and peugeots for over 500k and only had 1 problem which was a generic bosch fuel pump failure

I dont know if im lucky with my cars or its due to the way i look after them

Ive been having great fun with our new VW golf tsi not even done 4k yet and its had problems with the turbo/sc and steering rack along with electrical gremlins

Go see it, look over it and compare it to something else

What do you consider a deal? Less than 2.1k? Or some other car?

Ive worked for Renault/Peugeot/Nissan and now VW, but by far VWs have better reliability and fewer warrenty issues. Equalled by Nissan, but a distant third and fourth were the French cars. Must just be me

Your TSi has had a very uncommon fault with the steering rack, but replaced FOC under warrenty. Never heard of the turbo issue, but some do need software updates (electrical gremlins?), again covered by warrenty and a 5minute job.

Trust your OH, Renaults are generally very unreliable.

German or Japanese are your best options.

my point is my car french car with over 100k has only had 1 fault, the vw that is less than 6 months old is crap to be honest

but you get good and both cars whatever the make i suppose

I have never owned a renault though i guess

That's true. And if you go by what the reliability table says Suzuki are top dog :rotfl: it's all fairly subjective and you can get good/bad for any make. Given French or Golf TSi, I know which i'd choose though ;)
