  • i have a netgear wireless kit.

    i bought the tesco one,

    all seems ok, no probs.
  • Hi benfc, yes it will change channels remotely, has three channels, I got one in August £19.99, use on downstairs  NTL box from bedroom

The Gigair one is the Currys one, and was sold originally for £89, reduced to£24.99 in August sale, but came up as £19.99 at till. Our local currys still have them, but Dixons one if same is even better price.

Link to original MSE Grabbit thread which had Currys link

    HTHs Scat ;)

PS Also have Belkin Wi-Fi, + 4 Dect phone, and no probs so far :o
    Moi....? ;)

  • Looking on Tranwo website, the Gigaair 2323 and Gigaair 2424 are effectively the same in terms of the technology used...

    The differences...

on the 2323 the infrared extender is a separate mouse attached by a short cable to the main device
on the 2424 the infrared extender is built in

on the 2323 the aerial is built in
on the 2424 it is an extendable (portable radio) style .. although in my house I have it permanently down and the reception is still brilliant)

Finally difference ... the 2424 is quite sleek (especially in Silver), whereas the 2323 is one ugly mother!!

    However ... for £14.99 (2323 from Dixons) or £19.99 )2323 from Curry's);  is beauty really worth £20  (£39.99 for 2424 from Maplin)

    Now that's individual taste  ;D

Seem to be a few 2424's on Ebay and seem to go for £30 +/- £5.

I just bought an AV Wand version on Ebay for £15 although P+P was expensive at £8.

    Will see how it goes.

    Try http://www.cableuniverse.co.uk/ for scart splitters.
I bought one about 18 months ago. Really friendly people ;)

Its not big and its not clever.
  • I popped to Kings Lynn, Currys Superstore today, in the hope they would have these in stock. All they had wasthe Philips AV Sender at about £80. Such as pity as my Tescos one would be returned double quick!

On the "nerd" (technicial) front, I note that the Currys/Dixons system has only 3 selections for wireless channels instead of 4 on the Tesocs model. This might be important for people in built up areas such as blocks of flats etc. A positive point is that the Currys/Dixons model has an extension remote eye for both the receiver and the transmitter. The Tescos model only has this on the transmitter - and in comparison, it is a cumbersome wire. This should enable you to hide the transmitter/receiver out of view - simply relying on the remote eye for changing channels/volume/etc.

I also note that the Currys/Dixons model carries the remote control signals for "up to" 70 metres (line of site) compared to 50 metres (line of sight) for the Tescos model.

As I have a DECT 'phone, a partially wireless burglar alarm and a wireless doorbell, I looked at their transmission frequencies. In my case, none of them interferes with either products.

I bought the Tescos AV sender over the weekend and am very impressed with the picture quality. Unfortunately the transmitter was interfering with my Netgem i-Player (freeview box) on some channels - making them unwatchable on the directly connected TV. I haven't yet had chance to play with it to see if this is resolved by transmitting on different AV sender channels.

I have also had issues with the Tesco unit remotely controlling my Netgem i-Player - but again, this might be down to the transmission channel or placing of the flimsy remote cable.

I would be very interested to hear the findings of anyone who has bought a Currys/Dixons AV Sender for £14.99/£19.99

Just to add to this to let people know technical details if they wish!

The two are internally the same, and the video sending bits are totally identical inside. The difference is the remote control secion. Note the video signal and remote control signal are sent seperately on two different antennas, the video one is about 3cm long and actually built into the box in both cases.

On the 2424, the infra red receptor for the remote control are built into the box, so it has to be facing you, on the 2323 the receptor is on a little wire so you can hide the main bit and it's a bit easier to point the receptor where you will be zapping from.

On the 2424, the antenna for sending the remote signals between the units is a telescopic thing on the back of the unit, and on the 2323 it's acutally part of the wire that the infra-red reciever is connected with. IMHO the 2424 telescopic thing is quite ugly as I need to point it in a funny direction for the remote signals to reach the transmitter.

Finally on the 2424 the infra-red emitters at the transmitter end are fitted into the box AND you can add another one on a wire, while on the 2323 it's on the wire no choice in the matter.

I got 2x 2424's and one 2323 for a friend, and I actually prefer the 2323, mainly because you can hide most of them out of the way and because the antenna is discreet! The 2323 also came with a scart pass through connector for the transmitter, so no need for a splitter.

hope that random info is use to someone!!!
  • Excellent technical summary - good to have someone who knows their stuff on here :)

One question I have been wondering...

Can you "pair" a 2323 received with a 2424 transmitter?

I need one more receiver for my set-up (as I've just converted my garage into a "den" for the Kids)

2323 receivers are slightly cheaper than the 2424 receivers but no point getting one if it won't receive the signal ok!
  • I know that these devices operating on the same frequency can cause interference with other equipment but is there any chance someone else can actually pick up the pictures and sound you are transmitting?
For instance if both me and my neighbour bought the same senders from Dixons and with the same frequency would I see what they were watching?
I would guess that the signal was encryped like digital cordless phone handsets.
When analogue mobile phones were around they could be listened into by someone with a scanner.
