    hi there,
from 5.10.08 i started reading the gas meter everyday! started out of interest to build a picture of usage and also so i have ammunition when the next 30% increase comes along with an estimated reading for the increase point.
just stumbled on this thread, got my readings out, done the calcs (23days and used 9.107m3 gas) = 4.4653kwh/day!!!!
4 bed detatched with combi/gas fire/gas hob and 4 of us here. i have recently become obsecivley tight with energy. ch been on breifly once in the time period (set to 15deg)! fire on rarely and try to get us all to wash with the cold tap instead of heating a run of pipe! shower is electric though and that is my big hitter.

Gosh another one really low. I thought I was doing well. lol. I've used about 12kwh in the same period as you. Im paying £20 a mth. How does that compare to you.

Oh and we are averaging 9 units for electric at £35

Over the last year we have used on average 17 kWh a day of gas, mostly just pilot light and hot water. We rarely use the heating if we can help it.

Our electric has increased quite a bit now I am working from home and we have moved from laptops to PCs, to 8.5 kWh on average over the last year from about 5 previously.

dd is £36p/m gas, been with atlantic for 15m or so and it hasn't changed in that time.

currently they owe us £61, thats before the quarterly bill thats iminent, which, let me see......32m3......352kwh,s....should be about £12!!! woo hoo.

reckon i should have banked more than enough to see us through the winter when i do turn on the ch. trying to hold out until november, but lordy its cold today, been hovering around zero out on my travels today.

Woby Tide, Im only paying £20 a mnth for Gas and we arnt using that much different, you a bit less, but yet you're paying £15 a month more. Im with EDF.

whats your annual kWh usage though, must be reasonably low. Ours is only low during summer, annual amount is 10,000 kWh hence the £35, annual bill about £400

Edit: going by your earlier figures of 12kWh ofr 4 summer months and 4 winter months at 41kWh, if you take the missing months, Aug-Nov even using your summer rate of 12kWh gives you an annual useage of 7,800kWh. Even the cheapest supplier has an annual bill for that rate of £294, at £20 per month DD you aren't even covering that bill, are you not under paying by some way on your bill? Even taking a midpoint figure on those other 4 months puts your bill at £350 ish, some £100 over your monthly DD over a year?

Yes I believe electric meters are in kWh and gas are in cubic metre or feet.
The gas companies could have calibrated their metres in kWH too but then that would have made your bill more understandable so they used cubic metres to make it really hard for you to read and understand and compare energy costs.
    Nice people the gas companies.

    Actually, they couldn't.
Gas is measured by volume, not energy content at the meter.
The only way the meter could register in kWh would be to analyse the gas for its energy content as it passed through, which would make the meters significantly more complex, expensive and prone to failure.

Instead, the quality of the gas is measured by the distribution company at certain points on the network and these figures are used for properties drawing from that part of the network.

There is also the volume correction factor that is always 1.02264 (or always has been so far). This was introduced to help calculate the correct amount for the suppliers to pay for the gas to their suppliers - it used to be included in the price.

The calculation is included on every bill, and all you need to do it put the numbers into a calculator. If you want a calorific value - look here -
This table really shows why the CV is important - in Stornoway you get over twice as much heat out of each cubic metre of gas as everywhere else in the country, and this needs to be taken into account.

It is relaively simple to calculate how much energy is released when a volume of gas is burned. It explains on your gas bill, or at least used to, how to do the calculation.
If the metre was calibrated to take into account this calcualtion millions of people would not have to go the trouble of needlessly repeating the lengthy calculationi.
Nobody want to know the volume of gas they have used, thats totally meaningles and useless information, so that is what the gas company show you!! B******ds!!
