thanks for the input peeps.
I'm sitting about 10 - 11ft from the screen. So it may be the tv is too big.edit- no, we are ok on this.
Would i get a better picture from a satalite rather than through a ordinary ariel.
It makes me angry to have to pay Sky a monthly subscription just so i can watch the tv without ruining my eyesight.
I have just been told that the BBC and C4 or C5 will be broadcasting nearly all mainstream programs in HD very soon, anyone else hear this??
I am seriously tempted to sell this tv and get a smaller one, but at the end of the day the picture is still going to be worse than with the old analouge, it is crazy making us change over.
Lastly, are some of you saying that a plasma wouldn't have this problem.
thanks again..Not ashamed to say ABBA are Great :j0 -
But the digital signal is no better or worse than analogue - if you had put a set-top box on your old TV you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
I think you're blaming the digital switchover, when actually, its the wrong choice of TV which is your fundamental problem.
It's got nothing to do with "the Government" or the switch to digital.
It's just that you either have the wrong TV for your needs, or you have it set up incorrectly.0 -
Most people consider Plasmas to handle SD pictures better than LCDs. I have a Panasonic TH37-PX80 and it has a good SD picture via Freeview. It is better via my Cable Digibox though but then they are well know for being good at upscaling SD pictures. Can you get cable where you are?
Instead of Freeview you could get Freesat installed. That would involve a set up cost but there is no monthly charge. It also includes some HD content. Don't confuse it with the free staellite stuff crom Sky which also tends to be called freesat.
I doubt if hre will be that much HD content for a while yet. At the moment ITV HD is only available on Freesat and BBC HD only shows a very limited number of programmes in HD. They're still making a lot of stuff in SD, even new series like Merlin are SD.It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
I think you should play with all the settings before throwing in the towel on this TV - honestly our Samsung had EXACTLY the same picture issues before we found the optimum settings on AVForums.
A quick Google of your TV with the phrase "optimum settings" gives the following results, for example:

Feesh, don't really understand what you mean 'wrong sort of telly'. Should i have got a plasma then??.
My needs are to be able to watch TV without getting eyestrain, and not even the TV engineer can get a better picture from it.
Don't get me wrong here, watching dvds is superb NO PROBLEMS at all, but i bought the tv for TV, not to play games on etc
Why do manufacturers make tellys that give a crap picture ??
Just had a thought, can you still buy analouge tv's..Not ashamed to say ABBA are Great :j0 -
Lastly, are some of you saying that a plasma wouldn't have this problem.
thanks again..
Yes, that is what I am saying, I have a 42" Plasma that does not suffer from any of this, I also have an LCD in the bedroom that does the same as yours.
The picture via Satellite would not be any better on SD material.0 -
thanks for the links, will check them out now
also Inactive, my neighbour has a 50" plasma and the picture is unbearable, but he is nuts........ and he says he's looking for a 60" .....Not ashamed to say ABBA are Great :j0 -
:rotfl:
It's OK, I like ABBA as well..;)0 -
Feesh, don't really understand what you mean 'wrong sort of telly'.
Well, to be honest, it does sound like maybe you didn't do enough research before buying it - I'm not saying its a bad telly, just might not be the best one for your particular needs.
E.g. you don't have Sky, so there's not much point in forking out extra for top-notch HD. And it sounds like it might be too big for your room.
When we bought ours, I spent weeks on here and AVForums researching it. I found that it wasn't worth forking out for certain features......now I am going to start digging myself a hole as I can't remember what, exactly (!)
but there was something about different types of HD and lots of people were saying that they weren't even sure if HD was going to take off. So although our TV is HD, it isn't 1080p....or whatever the top spec is.
We also knew that certain things like refresh rates were important, so we looked for TVs which maybe sacrificed HD spec but had betters specs on things like scanning rates. Also I was looking at Sonys for a while and it took me a lot of online research before I worked out their model naming system, and what each letter and number means. (Because some supermarkets flog off seriously cheap Sonys - however I came to learn that Sony's range consists of a variety of model types with VERY different specs depending on whether they are U, V, S coded etc etc).
It took me 2-3 months of research before I knew exactly which TV suited our needs. What's right for one household might not suit another.
So, I'm not saying your TV is crap, or that plasma is better than LCD....... but it might be that it's not the TV for YOU.....
And, after all this research, we got our TV home and hated it - the picture made us feel sick, especially high-action things like football matches. Like I've said, we had to go onto AVForums and get the optimum settings, and now we're really, really happy with it.0
