Great 'What to Buy in Pound Shops' Hunt. What should and shouldn't you grab?

  • I have purchased so many things from Poundland, such as:

Toiletries – e.g. Palmolive shampoo, H&S conditioner, Carex shower gel

    Cleaning – e.g. microfibre cloths

    Themed – e.g. Christmas, Halloween

    The list goes on!

I have bought batteries a couple of times, but none have worked. So I now just buy them from Christie’s 99p store.

I have queried the price on one occasion only – and the ‘How Much’ was more like a yelp than anything else.

    Let me explain…

When I buy 2 for £0.99 items from Christie’s, then I’m charged e.g. 50p for the one item (although would have been 49.5p if we still had the half pennies, but that’s another story).

When I purchased one item labelled 4 for £1 in Poundland, I was charged £1, not 25p as expected.

Don’t know if this is the same for other stores, but just be aware of this.

I trawled the pound shops in Norwich (Anglia Square, in case you want to go) for stuff for a big party in September. Got various large size tupperware type containers and some plastic salad bowls (3 for 99p) and a huge roll of kitchen towel which I am still using.

My shopping now is: visit pound shops every couple of months for toothpaste/shower gel/bathroom stuff. Weekly, go to Lidl first, then go upmarket for what I can't get there. Can't imagine how much money I save!

This is exactly what I do,in Norwich as well. I use local farm shops for veg and meat though where possible. The local farmers usually to me off when a beast is due to go to slaughter. Also buy eggs at the farm gate £1.60 doz large, free range, you can even 'talk' to the hens :rotfl:

Poundshops great for branded toiletries, packs of chocolate (hubby loves snickers), paper, dvd cases etc. Even saw some IAMs cat food there 1 kg packs about £5 normally.

I don't know why though but I always hope nobody I know will see me in there. Why is that???
Got a jar of Birds coffee which was £1.46 in Morrisons last week.
You don't usually come out with nothing when you go into a pound shop.

I'm a big fan of the 99p shop near me (SE London); recently they've had twin packs of washing up liquid (1.5l for 99p, cheaper than Tesco), Original Source shampoo & shower gel, tinned & jarred foods, and assorted cleaning products. I do tend to shop around though - just because it's in the pound shop you shouldn't assume it's a bargain!
    2015 comp wins - £370.25
Recent wins: gym class, baby stuff
Thanks to everyone who posts freebies and comps! :j
