Need help please. I've had some fab advice on the marriage etc board.

Our current situation, through no fault of our own, has ended us up having a £100 a month food budget for 4 of us till at least January. I normally spend 50-60 on food a week, so this is a real challenge, and one which I will have a bloody good go at but I need some starting points please.

I've looked on the os recipes and jotted down some stuff, but has anyone got any other advice or recent recipes? Need kinda 50p-£1 dinners, healthy please, no rubbish or msg, or hydro fat etc, and we have 2 small children so needs to be child friendly too. Puddings suggestions will be gratefully received, as my little ones always get offered a pudding.
    Is it really really possible?

I'd be sooo grateful of any help please.

    :j
  • Mrs M, could you put me down for £200 for November as it is a 4 week month for me. Not quite finished October, but hoping to come in more or less on budget. Will be posting my Sept total in a minute - sorry it's a bit late :o

    Thanks

  • Rightho, I've been lurking and following the challenge from a distance for a while and now I'm ready to have a go for real :D

Mrs M can you please count me in for £200 for November, I'm running 26th to 26th which coincides with paydays for me. I'm hoping to get a week in hand soon so that I can run a proper calendar month to give myself some slack.

There's just me and t'other half and I'm planning to count groceries, cleaning stuff etc. and takeaways (one either once a month or once every two months - and as it's my birthday next month it'll be chinese soon!). I'm also planning to count an average of my Costco shopping, I've been totting it up since July and I'm using the average monthly figure to try to put a sensible figure into the budget!

    Fingers crossed!

First spend for this month, a grand total of £7.72 in Mr T’s today. I got some whoopsied cod fillets, turkey ham, carrots, baby corn & sugarsnap peas, market value iceberg lettuce & cherry tomatoes & a few other bits.

I have masses of chicken stock, so I’ll use the 25p bag of carrots to make up a batch of carrot & coriander soup. And I have already had two roast dinners from the last whole chicken, frozen the dark meat & still have enough breast meat for a salad for tomorrow’s lunch.

And I still haven’t got to the bottom of the tubs of individual portions in the freezer …
  • I don't know how others do it yet as I'm only starting out on this, this coming weekend.

What I have done is list all the cheaper meats and then list next to that all the different meals I can make from them...for instance

    MINCE...Spag bol/chilli/lasagne/mince and dumplings/shepherds pie/meatballs

Then I work out that I can buy 2 x 800g of mince for 6.00 at tesco...this I will split into 6 of the above filling out will lentils and veg.

Next I would work out what kind of meals I would make with BACON...bacon and pea pasta/bacon and jacket spuds with beans/toad in the hole....these will all need plenty pots so I'm going to buy a sack of 25kg of pots for 7.00 from a farm shop.

    And so on...

I have realised it is a matter of being very organised and lists lists lists ;)

I'm with u on the organisation and lists thing!
Got a new file on my computer now.....

Can I just ask you about using lentils. My husband thinks he absolutely hates them and will not willingly eat them. So how do I add them to a mince meal without him knowing? I know how to cook them on their own, but should I cook with the mince or??? And how much should I used first as a 'getting him used to the taste without him knowing kind of scenario....:rotfl: '
  • Ok, can you put me dwn for £200 for Nov please? I've totally lost it for Oct! I'm wondering if I'll find it easier doing it weekly, so I think I'll aim for about £45-£50 a week and see how I got on with that. But will aim for £200 anyway....
I really need to sort out a new signature!

Hi is it ok if I join in? I have no idea how much we spend each month on food so I will do a rough figure and next month adjust as necessary. I will say £150 for November.
