OH and I with DD spent all day yesterday looking at caravans and have taken the plunge and put a deposit on a 2008 Eldiss Avente 556 so would appreciate any help/tips for novices from those of you in the know. Lilme and AnW's mum to name 2 lovely ladies I can immediately think of, if you wouldnt mind spending a few mins to PM with with anything you can think of that "you wish you'd known that sooner"!

We did similar 2 weeks ago but on an Avondale Avocet and are hoping to collect it next weekend. Exciting but scary isn't it?

RANT*** Was in tears yesterday because of kids. School reports came home - so many 'not achieved' that it's heartbreaking. One is in his last year of school - the other is 5th form. I really don't know what to do. Both are bright, just no motivation. Happily spend all their time playing WOW on computer. We tend to think this is the majority of the problem. Shall I pull them from their computers totally??? And TV, cos if they're not on computers they are in front of TV??? School ends for them in two weeks, then they have a weeks study leave, then exams start . . . We have obviously been useless parents . . . . no consistency . . . .

Don't beat yourless up on their behalf. I taught all of mine,( was form teacher for one of them) all should have been A* students, I know their IQs and CAT scores. After DD who was a C grade student getting loads of As and A*s I thought we were really good supportive parents.
DSs 2, 3 and 4 barely scraped through. I had banned TV, games machines, going out etc. I found them reading when meant to be revising instead!! They are now 22, 19 and 18, and apart from DS2 who is not well (he hs a good job though), the others are doing the studying needed to get them where they want to be, later than I would have liked but they are doing it in their own time. Sometimes it doesn't matter how hard parents try, the kids need to do it for themselves.

As my sons said to me last time I ranted at them for not working at school, they are all good, kind, law-abiding young men, they could have turned out a lot worse.

There is more to life than exam grades. So try not to worry too much.

Valli - it might be worth doing some research for your DD. Things must have moved on since you and I had to deal with these problems! I had a horrible time from 10 until about 14/15 when I finally saw a gynae who helped get it sorted. His opinion was that women shouldn't have to suffer, and he was vey helpful in making sure I didn't have any problems during my GCSEs/A-levels which might have affected my results. Gin works, obviously, but I think she's a bit young for that! There are lots of herbal options (devils claw, black cohosh), and acupuncture etc. may work too. I'll let you know how the reflexology goes!
I think I will start with the doc - but I wonder whether it's too early yet...
am somewhat concerned because she tells me they aren't allowed to leave class for the loo - and she is asking not to go to school. Their lessons are 2 hours sometimes - at best she is going to be worrying and hence distracted...so I need to check with school. As this is only the second she is still a novice...

Spending all day in my bedroom today - sorting it out! - I know what your minds are like!

Just done the veg for dinner and dispatched 3 bags of wrapped presents to my parents' house. DH currently looking at paint for DS's bedroom so it's all go. Will try and catch up with you later - if I don't get buried under all the clutter in my bedroom!

Raphael - congratulations on both scores - well done!

raph, welcome back, wow, you have been busy!!! That's some weight loss, well done and congratulations!

kaz, we looked at those, lovely caravan and seem to be very well put together (I changed my mind and wanted a 4 berth with an end bathroom). Only thing to be aware of is the top bunk weight limits, it's great for storage if your little ones get too big however with the fixed bunks the avante has in the 556. www.caravantalk.org.uk is one of my many lifelines where I ask the stupid things I don't know about. Drop me any PM you like, we're novices really but had to learn very quickly this year and have spent about 60 mights away in ours since we got it when I add it up, scary.....oh and don't fill it with stuff because you have to empty it again :rotfl: which is what I am sorting through now.

flower unfortunately he's always that ratty, well 40% of the time, he's just a right grumpy bum!

Summermoon sorry if I missed any posts about it, but did you get something sorted with the gas? Hope your DS2 is feeling better soon, get that flinging done, it's a great time to declutter when you move. I did a pack one, fling one box/bag every day in the run up to our move which really helped.

vivw I was going to trade ours in for an Avondale but they wouldn't offer me enough in part ex, with Avondale going under there are some great bargains on them. I have said when we sell ours in a few years time I will probably buy a second hand Avondale as the build quality was lovely.

greenbee, thanks, I knew it was too good to be true to think they would do the halogen ones :( bah! I want the LED ones too, especially for the caravan as when we're away without EHU they use lots less electricity. Good luck with the clear out.

Valli hope your DD is feeling better soon, I cringe just thinking about periods, something I've encountered rarely since having the injections and now the implant, I don't think I could cope with them again and my face dropped when the nurse suggested a break. Phone and speak to school about her leaving lessons if required, explaining her anxieties, bless her I remember being that age and having problems with them, not nice worrying all the time on top of the pain.

Oh so many to reply to, think I have said what I wanted to :o Anyway have done another WM switch, 2 sleeping bags now hanging over the landing, just sooooo much to wash/dry I am having to time when I put some that can go on airers, in TD, on landing etc as I don't want it just sat wet. Trying to plod through the unpacking, keep wondering if it will ever end. House is such a mess with bags everywhere so I need to try to get most of it done today. I did all the banking, bills and accounts stuff last night, should be a relatively easy month financially if nothing goes wrong which makes a change for November, phew!

Just had a 'who's parked on my drive the cheeky oik' flap, motorbike repair specialist and couldn't think who had a motorbike, calls DP and it's one of his friends who's gone to Manchester with them today :o :rotfl:so can stop ranting now.....

**plinks more £2 coins in tin** argh still not full, I will resist emptying it, I will resist emptying it............must be a good thing in a way that it's took me longer to fill this year because I am spending less so getting less change.

Oh if anyone spots a double memory foam topper cheap please let me know, I want one for the caravan next year as the beds aren't comfy enough for me! I can never be bothered to take the middle drawers out so double would be fine, king size would be ok aswell incase I do take them out.
One day I might be more organised...........

For a start you are not useless parents - as everyone on here knows, I've just been through the same with my DS - last year of school and not achieving at all, plays up, and just a general little g*t, even though that's not the way he was brought up. Others will tell you a similar story, but as everyone on here told me, it's not down to me, it's down to him/them in your case - they will realise, probably too late for school, but you are a kind caring mum who will help them get back onto the straight and narrow once they have worked out what they want - just be there for when they do.

One thing I have found is making my DS sit down and do some homework - I stopped doing the timed stuff as nothing got done before the 1/2 hour was up, now I set him some specific work (with the help of the school supplying it for me) and he has to do it before watching TV/going out/playing on computer - maybe that will work with your's rather than taking it away completly, a sort of carrot for doing well - and if he gets a good letter sent home from school/college, we go out as a special treat (or if we're skint, I cook us a special meal of his choosing or something...)

It works for short time, then you have to change or reinforce it all over again, coz they get bored or used to it, but it's worth a try, also, let them see how upset you are, if they're like mine they won't like to see that and a bit of 'emotional blackmail' works too, although I don't pull those big guns out very often.

Anyway, they will get there, it takes time and they will drag you through it while they do, but if they are good kids at heart, and I'm sure they are, they will be fine and will get there in the end, it will just take them longer than most... Good luck Hun x

  • Hi,

Hope everyone is well and welcome newbies/returners. So far today I've showered, gone shopping and washed some bedding. My aims for the rest of the day are to do more laundry, tidy up and find library book

    Hiya everyone
We've been really busy here changing rooms round and setting up a new computer (early christmas present to our children from my inlaws). It's great as it means they can go on the computer more as I never let them on the upstairs one unless we're in the room with them).

The house is no where near as tidy as it was before they all came back, that's the only drawback of having them back, lol!

Hugs to everyone and congratulations to raph xx
