I think I'll put mine back in HSBC/First Direct... Can't believe I only moved it out of there a few months ago for this to happen :(

Then I will have money in 4 different accounts just in case lol

Mine will be split between YBS (6.50%) and Egg (6.55%) with B&B (6.51%) as back up account.

Not decided which ISA yet, but likely to be either Northern Rock FRISA (6.0%) or Newcastle BS (6.0%) but waiting to see how they're going work it first.

I was looking at Egg too, I like their website and have been a credit card customer of theirs for years and years (somehow managed to avoid the purge earlier this year/last year) but does anyone have any data on how secure they are at the moment?

Obviously they are fully subscribed to the FSCS (with no passport jiggery-pokery) and so you get the usual £50k protection but weren't they in trouble and sold by Prudential last year to Citibank in the US?

Presumably Citibank, being a US bank, is quite exposed to this sub-prime problem? I had a look on Fitch but it's all a bit confusing for a plain and simple man such as myself.

Anyone with a greater understanding of things financial got any thoughts on Egg's position at the moment?

I looked at Egg but just get an uneasy feeling about them. Don't know why, perhaps once bitten and all that...are they UK?

So am now looking between Abbey @6.19 or NatWest esaver. The only trouble with the Abbey is I already have an esaver with them and think this rate may only be for "Brand New Customer Only"

Also had to be aware that as I have £48K to ivest in a year with interest added this takes me over the 50K. So might split it.

Blimey it all seems like a very bad dream, will I ever look back and laugh. I doubt it !!
  • Actually, if we have to leave our fixed rate bonds with the FSCS and get it back on maturity with interest (which is what I understood)...

2 years Icesave 7.06% was still a bloody good deal...
  • yes...anyone got any thoughts on egg..I have money there...?? and thinking of putting in more.. I really like their website..but what is source of concern ?
    thnx bl

I know it sounds silly but I think I feel uneasy with Egg simply because if anything goes wrong I can't queue ouside the branch.

At least with the Natwest and Abbey I could throw a few stones at windows if things take a turn for the worst!.

The icesave fiasco has really made me view things differently. I wouldn't have given it a second thought before.

But the interest rate is attractive...
