    hi lgg..
are they connected to huntingdon sciences?

i read many a time years back that they were. so if thats still the case i dont really want to put my money in with them
  • I had money in icesave / kaupthing / icici.....3 x.£35k...
have bought icici home and into B&B...I know icici got a bit shaky and then seemed ok...?? but trust nothing off shore now....not cos more risky...but cos probably more difficult if comp scheme ever needed...

am presently transfering K/E money to.. egg...6.5%...really like egg website...clear / lucid..easy to understand....

am looking into tesco at 6.5% ( including bonus for yr )

also nat west is offering esaver for 6.5 ( including 1 yr bonus)...that would be good for ppl who are transfering isa over...get 7%+ ... if over £27 k isa...but as mentioned previously..have to get e acct....I did..took about 2/3 wk..and now up and running...and took 2 pins to activate on line acct..but now ok...but.. ..not a great web site...

just feel now after this iceland debacle....that prefer money close and UK...

made me think also about ulilities...I have swapped before....but now have gone over to Southern Elec / Scottish power ( only UK provider all the others are french / german etc....
what is happening to me ???)

hope we all get pour money in Nov..good on fscs if they do it....also feel ppl having a go at alistair ( not here ) about that phone call transcript are out of order...
think his extrapolations were spot on...

I too had money in all three "banks" blondey - moved most of ICICI money back to UK, still waiting for Kaupthing Edge (despite so many promises I am losing track! they promised me by today .... they still have a few working hours left but so far nothing) and ICESAVE, Tesco looks quite good.

Why do people keep comparing those who put their cash into a FSA regulated savings account operated in the UK to someone who bets on a horse? The two are quite different.

You seem to imply that people who saved with Icesave are failures and their word should not be trusted, not so, Icesave in the UK was not a failed bank, the reason it collapsed was because the Icelandic authorities stole our money!

I apologise if I gave the impression that I thought Icesavers were failures. Being one myself, albeit for a relatively small sum of circa £8k, it was not what I wanted to imply. What I wanted to say was that no-one who deposited in Icesave is really in a position to make blanket statements like "stay away from passport schemes" and "don't trust johnny foreigner again". Some people may be swayed from makng sound deposits/investments just because the host is off-shore.

I'd agree with avoiding ING but not Santander. All of their many UK subsidiaries are, as far as I know, 100% FSCS - no passport rubbish. So the fact their owner is Spanish doesn't really matter.
But worth noting that passport situation can change. And worth noting that Alliance & Leicester is separately covered by the FSCS up £50k from the Abbey & B&B combined up to £50k.

Just a thought - IMHO Spain's a law unto itself with its landgrab laws & hugely corrupt planning history & alleged mafia connections.
I don't know why there is no passport arrangement with Santander like the other European banks operating in the UK? Dutch, Irish & Cypriot banks all have.
Does that mean that their is no compensation scheme in Spain? (Frightening for the Spanish population if that's the case.....)

What would you guys recommend as being a fairly high paying, no catches (as in, no bonuses), instant access savings account (will be buying a house sometime in the foreseeable future, so no fixed rate stuff) from a 'safe' place to invest?

I'm tempted by the AA, but already have a fair amount with The Halifax and I'm not sure how safe HBoS are still, also Egg, but I really have no idea about them.

    Cheers

I am going to try BM I think as it looks like an ok clean account for now and is covered by the UK scheme.

My Isa is in Icesave. Have I lost my tax break?

No. The FSCS and HM Revenue & Customs will make sure that your savings can be put into a new Isa in the UK. When you get your cheque from Icesave, you will be able to reinvest it in a new Isa. However, you will not be able to open a new Isa until you get your compensation. [/quote]

From other posts I thought I could open an ISA but keep it nil balance utill Icesave compensation, and have to because I've used this years tax free allowance but this states not. It is a little out of date but is it correct.? I am leaving the UK mid Nov for near 6 months, how can I make sure my cheque? (it says cheque) can be put into an ISA if I can't pre open one. It does not seem fair that I might have to wait until I return and loose all interest I desperately need while away.

The general position is that you are allowed one lot of ISA allowance each tax year. You do not have to have the same provider each year - hence you can have lots of ISA pots. However, there is nothing stopping you from moving one of your ISAs from provider A to provider B - this movement is not part of your ISA allowance. The Icesave situation I think falls under the latter situation.

Of course, if the Icesave ISA includes use of your allowance for the current tax year then, well, you have already used up your allowance for this year!!

    £4000 Yorkshir building society
    £3000 Bradford and bingley

Birmingham midshire is a good option, however they ask to open an account with a checque.... I dont have any cheque accounts :(
