saga car insurance

  • We found it was about the same as the best quote we could get via Tesco - except that Saga includes cover for unlimited travel in Europe. As we nip across to France quite often it saves us phoning the insurance company every time and paying extra.

    They are just another broker.

I was with them for a few years until I found out how much I was being overcharged; their tagline was just rubbish; they aren't cheaper for over 50's.

The best thing is to use Martins' guide and shop around ALL of th time, not just at renewal!
  • I think we must be the only customers of SAGA who are dissatisfied with their service!!!!
Following an accident last July,we are still waiting to be paid all the claim, and were informed this week that we had to write to the other parties insurance to claim or pay £40 for SAGA to do it for us!!!!
The accident was not our fault,SAGA would not pay for a hire car because we were on the way to our son's wedding and could not go home, they told the breakdown people to only pick up the vehicle (which was a write off) not the passengers!!!
When we did return home we had two weeks of constantly having to phone for information regarding the claim and although everyone was very pleasant we found it all very stressful. They disputed the value of our car and in the end the amount we received was not enough to buy a car the same as we had lost!!!
Needless to say we are not insured by SAGA any more.
  • Hello there. I work for Saga and I am concerned to read about the difficulties you have encountered with the handling of your insurance claim. Saga welcomes feedback, both good and bad, and I invite you to contact our Claims Customer Care Team to discuss these issues. They can be contacted on 01303 776778.

remember as they only insure over 50's you're not caught up with the higher-risk younger drivers

They do allow you to add a named driver over 21 years, with full driving licence held for 2 years or more. You still aren't subbing boy racers, though :D .

I have been with Saga for 2+ years after a bad experience with a 'cheap' (and awful) insurance co, found for me by the AA. After I had been driven into, the process of sorting out the claim took over three years. My insurance company did not keep me informed of progress, months would elapse between communications and they refused to acknowledge that he had driven into me, although his various accounts of the accident conflicted one another. The final straw came after they had settled blaming both parties, when they sent me a letter 2½ years after the event requesting that I go to court and claim against the other driver to recoup 'my' losses (their losses actually, as that is why I paid for insurance). I refused, on the grounds that he knew my address and could come round and get beligerent. He, on the other hand had only given me the address of his firm.

I would never get involved with a second rate insurer again. There comes a time when a company has shaved so much off its profits to be the cheapest that it can no longer give the service you would expect. There used to be a wise old saying 'you get what you pay for'. Often very true.
  • I have been with Saga for several years. One accident (wife’s fault – I would say that I guess) was dealt with over a Christmas period very efficiently. They wrote the car off and the settlement offered was twice what I had been expecting.

Just got a renewal quote from RAC nearly £100 cheaper BUT noticed it excluded commuting. Wife has a little part time job so thought I should mention it. They wanted to know time of day travelled, distance and type of roads and how frequently. 4 days a week 1.2 miles twice a day, half a mile on A road – extra cost £27.

My Saga price includes business use. I didn’t ask RAC about that but I guess by the time they add it they won’t be much cheaper than Saga, if at all.

I guess you get what you pay for. I’m staying with Saga. Also have their Buildings and Contents but fortunately never had to claim.

(Wife did have one other little bump – not her fault. The other person’s insurer (Churchill) telephoned me about the accident before my wife had chance to. They promptly fixed our car and provided a hire car with no arguments.)
  • I changed to Saga this year for both my car insurance and my home and contents - I saved over £500 altogether!

Does anyone know of any other insurance companies that offer unlimited European travel?
  • I used to have motor insurance with Saga. Original quotation and successive renewals was smooth enough, but after about 3 years with them I got involved in a claim, in that I was hit (light touch, actually) in queueing south-London traffic by white van man who claimed against me for alleged damage to his van. I won't go into the tedious details of this, but suffice to say I strongly refuted this claim and told Saga so. The matter then got referred to Saga's nominated lawyers, and that was my sole contact from then on, ie., you don't find yourself dealing with Saga in this situation. These lawyers told me they wanted to settle, because of the absence of any independent witness. I was very much against this because it struck me as rolling over in the face of bullying (something I thought Saga should be wary of doing), but the lawyers did it anyway! The other party refused to accept, from which point Saga's lawyers agreed with me - albeit rather reluctantly, I thought - to take the matter to the Small Claims Court. I spent a lot of time preparing for this and the result was, come the Small Claims hearing, the case against me was thrown out.

The point of all this is that I felt Saga, or their lawyers, were too ready to buckle under claimant pressure, contrary to their customer's interest, and/or not spend a lot of time on small-ish matters (the claim against me was about £500, I recall). But, had they settled as they attempted to do, my record would have shown a claim, and my no-claim discount would have gone. I have to admit, though, that this type of approach may be standard in the industry - I've never had another claim, so wouldn't know.

I eventually left Saga on the grounds of their (then) non-competitive price.

I have a Fiesta and my renewal last year for fully comp with Fords was just over £300, i went on a comparrison site and got a couple of quotes, one was from Saga for about £165, i phoned Saga and they brought it down to just over £150.
Can't say what they may be like if i wanted to claim.
