Electronic Cigarette

I should just add, that even though the e-cig (like nicotine patches etc.) contain nicotine, nicotine is NOT a known cancerogenic.
Also, one of the many great things about e-cigs are that you can cut down on the nic level -right down to zero, without having to give up the other psychological effects of giving up smoking.0 -
Isaac-the-red wrote: »Watters, from all the info I have come across, the e-cig does not cause any passive smoking problems. Although it imitates real cigs so well, it doe's not burn so no carbon monoide or tar is released.
There is lots of info on the e-cig in this eBay group :-
http://groups.ebay.co.uk/clubforum.jspa?forumID=18000022089
Check out the article that savvy sue posted on the last page - it makes for interesting reading.
As i said on my last post -the research suggests that the e-cig is "relativley" safe to bystanders - relative to what?! A normal cigarette yes ,but not as safe as not smoking anything at all.
The article has put enough doubt in my mind as to the safety of using it around my daughter that i would rather just go outside to use it.
(makes it even more "realistic" to me as that what i was doing anyway.)0 -
I'm not, and never have been a smoker, and I've never met anyone who's used an e-cig either, basically I know what I can remember reading in that NS article, which isn't going to add much to the sum of human knowledge. But FWIW, here's what I think:
As an adult, I wouldn't object to someone smoking an e-cig close to me in the way I used to object to smoky atmospheres before The Ban, UNLESS I could smell the vapour and found it offensive.
And as a parent, no-one I knew would ever have been allowed to smoke a cigarette anywhere near any of my children when they were small. Once they were larger they'd have objected themselves, because like me they don't like the smell.
So would I have the same objections to someone smoking an E-cig close to a small child? At this stage, probably I would. Because whatever else we know, we know that these things are helping your cravings, and your cravings are down to addiction, so how do we know that what's coming out in the vapours isn't addictive to them? Never mind harmful in other ways. At this stage, we're not certain. It seems unlikely it's anything like as harmful as passive smoking, but we just don't know for the e-cigs.
Plus, we already know that having parents who smoke makes children more likely to take up smoking - so do you want them to see you smoking e-cigs? Again, I wouldn't.
But this is just an opinion. Feel free to disagree ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Someone who passes by you is a "passer-by". A "by-stander" stands by you
Result of anti-smoking NZ scientist's research Oct 08: "Lacking any active ingredient or any gaseous products of combustion, the PG mist or ‘smoke’ is not harmful to bystanders".
I am assuming that parents who would not allow their baby in the same room as an active e-cig would also keep it out of the kitchen & bathroom, away from surfaces treated with household cleaning products, nowhere near a car, and indoors with an air filter until they are sufficiently developed to withstand the horrendous atmospheric pollutants prevalent inside and outside our homes. And they wouldn't hold their baby wearing a nicotine patch or perfume or hand lotion, or kiss it within several hours of smoking a cigarette...
I don't blame anyone for wanting to take extra care with a precious, innocent baby, but they should not be careful exclusively in regards to e-cigs.
It's interesting to keep up with what is being published on e-cigs, and the New Scientist article might possibly raise awareness in people who could encourage scientific research, but I don't think that the magazine itself or the article is aimed at the scientifically educated reader. Plus the effort to present an impartial overview has led to invalid negatives to be included. The writer didn't include the views of anyone who'd benefited from e-cigs.
God knows electronic cigarettes are not perfect, I have raged and wept over mine - but after 50 years of slavery to tobacco I haven't smoked it for... it'll be FOUR MONTHS on Monday
No other "smoking cessation" device could have done this for me.
Both of my parents died from smoking-related diseases, my mother came to live with me while she died of lung cancer (and I still didn't give up, that was over 20 years ago). It was from my parents that I learned to be a smoker, as a child it was my greatest ambition to join the ranks of smokers, it was the one ambition I did manage to achieve

Have removed origional post due to what was ( i hope - lol )- a misunderstanding !!!0 -
Well my new atomiser and juice turned up this morning. I have just 5 mins ago attached and tried it and it is definately an improvement on the last one. I dripped some juice directly onto the atomiser also to try and get it going. Although their is still not as much vapour as what I have seen they can produce I think like veronarona said they can take a while to warm up so i'll keep going.
The juice i got was B&H High from oksmokey it's a much nicer taste than the cartridges that came with it so quite please. I'm going to try and get it working better for when my boyfriend comes home tonight.
When you refill a cartridge with the juice, how many drops to you tend to drip on?
I have actually been given up smoking for 18 months but I am enjoying this - naughty I suppose. I was thinking of buying myself a pink one and getting some of the mint and other no nicotine juices.0 -
Stand off!
Watters & Veronarona!!
Love you both - but you are misreading each other. Veronarona is really not patronising - she is being honest.
To put a spanner in the works of all these theories........
I smoked whilst pregnant and my babies grew up (their dad too), I didn't know it was a 'bad' thing to do.... Both were not premature and had to be induced and were a good weight. Both are very anti smoking and have never been inclined to smoke.
My sister and husband, non smokers, two children (like me), never smoked or smoked near them, both of the children grew up to be smokers and still are.
And before you can say anything - we lived miles apart so I had no influence over my sisters children!!
Watters, we all want the best for our children - no one is saying smoke or have an e cig near them. But just saying what is in an e cig is less 'harmful' perhaps as to what is in other household cleaners and products.
We are now living in a society that has more allergies and asthma than ever before - because we are too 'clean'. No one lets their children make mud pies - or is it all these cleansers that contain bleach and who knows what - to be honest............. we've gone off track... not sure that is a bad thing - but children were healthier years ago when we were not so 'clean' or used old fashioned products that didn't have all the chemicals etc.
Anyway...................
think I'll go have a fag..................Genie

I understand what you are saying and by no means is it a stand off between the 2 of us - from my side anyway.
Just 2 people having differing oppinions.
If a heavy smoker who does smoke indoors switches to an e- cig then yes the health risk looks like it would be greatly reduced.
But if you smoke outside like i do then ( the research suggests ) that they cannot say whether /or not i would be increasing the health risk by switching to an e-cig and smoking inside.
In my oppinion its better to be safe than sorry ( and as i have said before no different to what i have been doing anyway)
I love my - e-cig and i know veronarona does too ( must be good to help a smoker to stop after 50 years)
And (when you read this )i would like to apologise to you veronarona if i have offended you in any way - i do respect your oppinion and advice on the e-cig just sometimes you can put your oppinion across a bit too passionately !;)
All the best anyway we are all here for the same reason get tobacco out of our lives for good !!

The B&H juice was really good i'm going to get some Mint & Lambert & Butler next.0
