My prescription in both eyes is weaker than -8.00.
I remember a couple of years ago trying for online suppliers, but no dice. Last week I tried one online outfit, and they didn't have an option for anything below -8.00.
I have read through a big chunk of this thread, but can't find anything relevant and up to date.
Do I still have to go to the High St, or are there any online suppliers who can now cope with this strength of lens?
Thanks.0 -

I attempted buying cheap glasses over the internet a couple of years ago, but there must have been a mistake somewhere along the line as I couldn't focus properly and therefore couldn't use the glasses. I usually wear contact lenses and just have glasses as a backup, so have continued using my glasses with an older prescription. I have come to the point now where I do really need to get an updated pair of glasses, and was wondering where I could get a reasonably priced pair.
My contact lense prescription is -7.0 in one eye and -7.5 in the other, so I do need thinner lenses. I get my lenses from Specsavers, but they are very expensive for thin lenses and will only give me a small discount as I have asked about this previously. I know that previously Asda opticians were quite cheap, but not sure if they still are and if there are any other alternatives that someone could suggest? I am based in South London, but the Asda I previously enquired at is close to my parent's house in Hampshire.
Any suggestions gratefully received! Thank you.0 -

You need a different prescription for your glasses, do not use your contact lens prescription. So first of all you need a new eye test.
If you need a prescription for reading as well, you can get mono vision prescription for contact lens. This is where one eye is corrected for distance and one eye for reading. I know it seems odd but it works. I had my contacts like this for years, although now you can get bi focal contacts.
Anyway, back to glasses, we always get our glasses over the internet from Zenni optical, they are reasonably priced and have a huge selection.

Thanks Sandy. I don't need reading glasses and did order over the internet with a full glasses prescription, but there was something wrong with them and I just couldn't wear them. I was really hoping for somewhere that I could go to have glasses fitted- I probably do need an updated eye test, so would be willing to have this at the same shop.0

I'm sure that there are no shortages of opticians in South London.
No, of course. But as I wrote in my message earlier, I have been struggling to find anywhere that sells frames with thinner lenses at a cheap price. Specsavers, etc are around £250 for my prescription and I was hoping someone may be able to suggest a more affordable alternative. Never mind, I think I will just have to save up!0 -
Hi,
I'm looking for some advice on glasses please. I now need to wear varifocals and have been advised by Specsavers that their brand of "tailor-made varifocals" would be best.
Now they cost £159 on top of the frames plus all the other add-ons.......
I've been looking at a local opticians and they are selling "New Freedom Varifocals" for £85 plus the frames. Can anyone tell me the difference please as I'm really confused.
Many thanks0 -
After reading Martins email I ordered a pair from Glasses direct after I lost mine and today they arrived and they are spot on with very good frames that fit better than my others - I was a little sceptical - but now I can see again lol - all at the bargain price of 12.95. Thanks Martin.
All my details are now on their site if I need more in the future.Save saynoto0870.com in your favorites, and stop giving companies more £££ dialling 0870 numbers when you can dial freephones or cheaper alternatives.:j0 -
